    David,

What powder are you using and what is your OAL in your 9mm loads?

So far for both coatings (Hitek as well as Powder coat) Alliant Bullseye 4.0gr (I have tried 3.8 up to 4.2)
    OAL 1.115"

3.8 was very inconsistent and often went less than 1000fps
4.0 was pretty consistent and averaged 1060fps
4.2 was consistent and averaged 1080 but often went over 1100fps.

I use 4.0 for my 124gr FMJ (@1.130") loads and averages 1045fps from the same gun (Factory G17)

I was under the impression that you'd previously shot the 9mm with a lube, so the Hi-Tek was the only change. If not, then I'm wondering what each barrel slugged at and what the boolits were sized to before the Hi-Tek. I've not played with Hi-Tek nor PC. A friend gave me enough boolit lube for multiple lifetimes.

    Yes
I had shot the 3.8BE and same mold lubed in Alox through Various pistols and not noticed leading. I had not shot the LRN Lubed bullets through the glocks that I recall. my C&R was what I shot them out of. (P38, Star B , Astra)

You won't want to hear this but Bullseye is a terrible powder for 9mm. The pressure builds tou fast and stresses out the lead bullet unless it is straight linotype. You would do much better with WW231, Powerpistol, or HS6.

I still have a lb of power Pistol
My notes show I have loaded and shot

    Power Pistol (5.2) 1.125

I did not write down what I shot it through or the velocity though

Not in 9mm, but we ran into a similar issue with WW231 and Sig 229 in .40 S&W.

It was too fast of a power and it would strip the rifling and keyhole. And by stripping the rifling, it SERIOUSLY leaded, to the point of making it a smooth bore.

Changing to HS6 solved the problem. Same bullet, same pistols, same velocity.

I just checked my records. My standard load for 9mm is Lee 125 PC or Xlox sized .356 with 5.4 Powerpistol and a COL of 1.100. I never chrono anymore as I load for function and accuracy rather than speed.

My notes show that 5.2 gns had flyers and that 5.4 cleaned that up.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but what velocities can you drive gas checked, powder coated, rifle rounds without leading? I’ve seen some say that you can drive them as fast as jacketed. What say you?

Boy I’m going to have lots of load Dev work when the range opens back up. For the 2 on the ends (Lee being 160gr and Lyman being 169gr) I think I’ll look towards 1600fps then pick a range to span that for an OCW run
The bullets are coming out 167 and 174 once coated and gas check added (gas checks account for about 4gr and they are dropping a few grains heavier than 160/169)

I did not powder coat the Lyman on the right as I liked how it came out with the HiTek. The other two Lee molds I also powder coated
Driving bands of the Lyman are big and sizing pretty consistent.
The lee bands are pretty thin

So, I ran some 308 loads using the Lee (far left) and Lyman (far right) with Hi Tek coat gas checked and 12,13,14gr Unique looking for a subsonic 308 load. I forgot to bring my Chronograph but they all did pretty good but the 14gr Lyman with Hitek put 3 touching at 50 yards. I have read posts of how that Lyman Mold likes low velocity (1600fps or less). that Lyman bullet did not do well w/ my 300BLK so I'll work up some more with both the Hitek and Powder Coat with Unique. Maybe its the powder, the speed or the 1:10 twist rate that the bullet likes better.

The reason the lube grooves on the Lee molds are thin is because they were designed to be lubed with liquid ALOX. Swede Nelson makes his powder coat bullets with smooth sides. I haven't tried one but he has several versions so they must be selling.

FYI, if your looking for molds but don't want to pay the inflated ebay prices, I have noticed that Midway seems to be putting some items available for back order.
    https://www.midwayusa.com/s?userSearchQuery=lee+mold&userItemsPerPage=48

I had put on back order a few 6 cavity mold handles and they actually arrived in a week. The prices also jacked up cause I ordered at $12.99/ea and now they are $24.99 ea
When I ordered the est in stock date was late March.
I'm making a guess that they are allowing back order when they are due to arrive soon.

I've been noticing Midway raising prices. I am watching for three lyman molds and they are $20 more than Midsouth shooter supply. Those $29 Lee molds on Midway are $22 at Mid South. The 6 cavitry molds are $56 at Midway and $44 at mid south.

Midway has lower prices and free shipping over $50. They had free shipping when their prices were lower and now they don;t have low prices. You still pay for shipping at Mid South but their stuff is a lot less.

    Just stuff to consider

I wouldn't even consider buying from anyone else but Midway before. Now I compare everything they have just like I do with Amazon now. THIS is how you lose customer loyalty.

I'd like to start casting. Probably not the best time to start but still might give it a go. I think I'll start with .45 cal first. What does everyone recommend to use, single cavity, double cavity, other? What else would I need other than something to melt the lead and a ladle?

Spend a lot of time and figure out what you want and create sign in's at Midway, Mid south shooters, Brownells and Natchez and sign up for product notifications for the molds and such you want. They come in and stay for hours to days normally. Powder quicker in minutes to hours and Primers is seconds if you even get that long. I've been waiting three lyman molds for over a month and not seen one yet. You got to make a list and play the long game because you'll not find everything in a couple months.

I thought I'd start with .45 or .357 or even .9mm. I guess it would depend on which molds I could find. I already reload so I've got primers, brass, powder. Just thought I'd like to try casting.
