  • I have random pounds of HS-6 and Win 231 acquired via a bulk buy. I have >1000 pieces of primed .45ACP and .38 Special that I have not loaded for yet. I also load .357 Sig and 10mm, but have developed loads I like with Power Pistol, AA9 and Longshot (all in my stash). I would prefer to not use the HS-6 or 231 for those calibers.
My .45 projectiles are 200gr plated and my .38 projectiles are 125gr FMJ. I have book data for both, but would like to know the MDS braintrust's opinion on whether these powders would mesh with the caliber/projectile combo I have in stock.
FWIW- My wife loves shooting .38 Special and I would like to develop a mild .45ACP load for her to shoot as well.

    I load .45 ACP with WW231. A LOT. Bullet is a 200 grain LSWC.

Back when the power factor (USPSA) was higher, I loaded 5.8 grains. But with the new lower power factor, I think that 5.4 grains chrono'd reliably a the new power factor.

I have not worked up a load for HS6 in .45 ACP, but it should work well. I have loaded it in .40 with a 175 grain LSWC. 7.5 grains for the older PF.

WW231 is a great powder for .45 ACP especially if you want lighter loads. HS6 is slower and is usually used on 9mm and .40S&W.

I would start at 5 gns and work up. Somewhere between that and 5.5 you will find a good consistent load.

W231 under a 200 grain SWC is the bee's knees in 45ACP. MANY years of tried and true results.

231 is an excellent powder in 38 Special as well.

I've no personal experience with HS-6.

I use W231 under 230gr RN in my 45ACP. Could certainly tweak the load some - just haven't gotten around to it. I presently use 5.3 grains and it reliably cycles my 1911s with stock springs.

I used to use 231 but found Universal to be super clean burning and more accurate in my 45. 231 left more residue it seemed to me but was accurate with my jacketed and cast 230 gr.
