My 7.5 inch had a horrible muzzle blast issue. It was like getting blasted in the eyes with a camera flash from 3 feet away. Once I put a Kak flash can on it, it became a pleasure to shoot. My advice about barrel length is to decide what size suppressor you might eventually end up getting, and whether or you want to be able to extend a handguard out over it. In that case, the shorter the better...

Exact advice I got from a friend at Freds. I have several 16'ers and wanted something shorter. I've got most of it finished and waiting on the brace and orward blast diffuser. Hopefully I'll get to shoot it this weekend.

ETA: This has nothing to do with you, erwos - Anyone considering short barreled rifle-ammunition guns needs to have realistic expectations. I chuckle whenever I hear 'velocity' mentioned in these threads. SBRs, whether pistols or carbines, are made for one primarily purpose. Urban-style combat. Clearing buildings, room by room. Secondarily, they can make good home defense weapons as well.

In that case, check out the energy numbers in comparison of 300 and 5.56. The 8" ftlbs for 5.56 is 749. 300 at that barrel length puts out 1027 from the given loads. This is done with much less noise/flash. It's just a more efficient and overall better cartridge for a shorter barrel. You also have that versatility to go with subsonics if you wish to do that for some reason.

What about 12.5"? I was always interested in how one would perform out to say, 500 yards with a scope. Done it with a 14.5" so I can't imagine its much worse. That would be a handy little scoped pistol.

I HAD a 7.5 inch. It was obnoxious to shoot. Muzzle blast, noise, concussion. Switched to a 10.5 inch barrel. Much better.

Also have a 12.5. It is quickly becoming my favorite.

All this talk of 26 OAL and fore grips has me wondering. Does that mean it gets registered as an AOW? Still need to Form 1 it on a stamp?

Not an aow, its just a firearm when its over 26”
Want to get really confused? Read the atf letter than talks about how to measure. “Stock extended to the extreme length”. Well its a pistol so its not a stock, but well go with that. Back then the sba3 didn’t exist. The thought was measure from the barrel not counting muzzle device, to the tip of the buffer tube. That wording says otherwise.

I have no basis for reference. I have an AR pistol. It is chambered in 300 BLK and is 10.3”

It seems to be...a little lively?
Could just be I literally don’t know what I am doing yet

I have a 12.5" 556, with a red dot on it. It is by far my favorite and I love what it can do. It has the potential to be sub-MOA if I use the right ammo and do my part. But then again, I did float the barrel and lap the upper.

What parts did you use for that build, if I may ask?

This is a build list I put together for a friend of mine, because he couldn't decide on rifle or pistol, so I gave him the choice of both. Just be sure to follow all state and federal laws.
