Took a ‘56 colt cobra and a new sw 642 out for some shooting. They are both very accurate if you can maintain the sight picture while shooting them double action. The colt has smoothed up somewhat over the last 64 years and it seemed easier to shoot after i settled into the first cylinder of 158 lead semi wad cutters. Although it wears away at the trigger finger, once i settled into some focus, it was shooting small groups at 20 feet. The smith, which i have had for 6 years, may have 150 rds through it and it is not so smooth. I was alternating between the crease nearest the fingernail and the pad of that finger. Felt like the resistance was 50# but was more like 12. Still, fun guns to shoot less than 50 rds per through at one time. And a challenge to shoot with accuracy and some quickness. The take away is these are good self defense revolvers but they take more practice than other guns and practice can be painful given that each weighs only 15 oz. there was recoil, but not enough to prevent a quick 2nd shot and certainly not enough to create problems. But these small grips, while great for concealment, are harder to shoot than many guns.

When I was a LEO and restricted to revolvers, my primary off-duty carry piece was a Colt Cobra only I did and still keep Pachmayr Compacs on it. Great revolver and I never felt under-armed with it.

Have you put a set of springs and shims in that 642? While the frame is a little different in the shrouded revolvers, a set of Wolff springs and shims on the hammer and trigger will lighten and smooth things out. However, you cannot make it as smooth as say a model 36 because of the internal hammer. You can't lighten it up too much or you will get misfires.

Some polishing to remove the machine marks in the frame along with frictional surfaces on individual parts will improve most revolvers without compromising reliability or safety. The hammer and sear will get better with more use. Be careful not to lose any of the smaller pieces or springs during disassembly.

    Gotta love a good revolver.
