Depends what you're looking for... and how much you're willing to spend.
If you are looking for a WW2 beware that they have been known to break lock blocks and crack slides,
so I wouldn't recommend getting a nice one if you plan to shoot it.
A decent mis-matched WW2 shooter can be had for $500 or so with some patience.
A post-war P1 or P38 should run about the same.
Correct matched WW2 will run more and like anything else condition, original / matched parts and no import markings drive the boat.
    You need to be on the ball to get a good deal at a show;
if you're looking at WW2 I'd recommend going to the P38 forum with a want to buy ad, or a good dealer that specializes in them.

Now that you have C&R in hand the world is your oyster.
Well, most of the US is anyway.

His point on the WW II ones is valid. I got a chromed one to shoot simply because it was cheap, in good shooting condition, and something I wouldn't mind repairing if it took damage. All-matching AC 43 Walther. If you want a safe queen, buy the one you like but be prepared to pay dearly. If you want a shooter a P-1 or a mismatched/refinished/chromed P-38 is the way to go.

Or best of both worlds, build a shooter using a steel WW2 P38 frame and 1970's upper with the "fat" slide and install a forged lock block.

Did you get that DPM kit from Robert Bowman? I’m thinking about ordering one. I got a good haul of Finnish Marked DP28 Pan mags for cheap

I did get it from him. But it seems pretty good However you may want to hold off because even though he says on the auction that barrels are available. Once I won the auction and asked about it he says he's still waiting on them. I checked with a few other places and they don't have the parts either. So currently is a waiting game.

What's the slide code on the P.38? Looks like Waa135 on the right side of slide = BYF44 = Mauser...
Grips (well, right one anyway) made by Julius Posselt which were used on Spreewerk only.
What are the proofs on the back (spine) of the magazines, esp the one marked "P38" (vice the later one marked "P38v")?
Is the base plate on the "P38" mag numbered?

The holster is a late war Police, the stamp should be an Eagle over schwartztika but if it has a letter I'd like to see it.

It is byf 44 all matching numbers and I don't see any import mark. That's about all I can tell you till I'm home

He’s a good guy. I got a PM63 & Yugo M49/57 kit from him. I think I’m going to get a DPM & SAR-80 kit next. It’s nice to have somebody who brings the kits in who actually tries to make decent cuts and doesn’t completely destroy everything that could be useful.

Kits are all new to me. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Did you use a jig for your reweld? I would be happy to rent it or buy it.

I did, I had to make it myself as the more popular jig is a bit squirrely. Used SMG fire control group, and an SMG barrel. Though if you can get an original barrel definitely go that route. I had all sorts of trouble there.

Feel free to shoot me a PM. This particular build is still plenty fresh in my mind.

Looking at the RP-46 attachment now.
What!??! I was better off knowing that didn't exist:( DPM becomes MUCH more interesting to me w/ a belt option. Whats the largest OD of the barrel? Wonder if a GM 1.375" blank could be turned to fit. Though the 24" length would be cutting it really close if the orig really is 23.8" per Wikipedia. I have too many projects already.

Just spent a bunch of money on M76 kits though.

Unsure, SMG is offering a turn-key solution that is drop in at this time but you must change the cone to get more gas into the system.

Rumor is that they are working on a new gas port system which would require a different barrel.

I really didn't spend too much time digging into the barrel specs as it seems they are some unique beasts (not many people at all making them). I have the specs though if you are interested (at least for DPM, not for RP-46)

They have the barrel listed for sale now too, but nothing on the specs for the gas system. https://www.smggunsstore.com/284-rp46

    4 mags! whoo-hoo!

OCJ, if that mag #3 has P38/U on side and WaA135 on the spine that's a difficult one to find.
If it's P38/U and E/359 it's also a bit harder to find than usual. These were used in the late 44/early 45 guns...
Either WaA135 mag would be correct for that gun, late 1944.

Mag 1 is for a Walther, probably late ac43/early ac44. Mag 2 is also Walther, early ac43 I think.

Those 4 mags by themselves are easily $400 and maybe $500.
The holster, $80-100 because a bunch of these just flooded the market - Ukraine imports someone has been sitting on.

Gun itself looks really nice, like I said the grips are for a Spreewerk but that's not the end of the world, easy enough to find a trade.

yeah i knew the U mag was a hard one to find, i got that one in a deal with 4 other mags(2 cz27 mags, 2 Browning 1922 mags and that one for 200/all) and then when i bought the P38 i got one of the other mags. Then the other day i bought the holster and two other mags for 70 cash. wasnt sure what to thnk on the holster thought it might be real but buddy thought maybe repro. I wasnt concerned due to what i paid .
