So I've found a bunch of spare parts that I've accumulated, including a ban-style 20" HBAR barrel of uncertain lineage. I'm going to cut the barrel down to 11" for an AR pistol. I know that I should use the carbine gas system, which I believe puts the gas hole at 7.8" from the bolt face.

So, how big should I drill the gas hole? I've seen lots of opinions, but no solid answers. I'll be using a Spike's Tactical pistol buffer tube kit, which gets great reviews. Caliber will be 5.56. Anybody got a suggestion, or hopefully some experience with this? This is supposed to be a fun project using as many spare parts as I can. I'm not planning to send it out. (Never mind whether that's the smartest choice or not.)

    Thanks, Dutch

Too many factors come into play to just throw an arbitrary number out.

For pistol length gas systems, I'd like to say start around .056, IIRC, that's the size of the Rainier pistol barrels gas ports.

If it doesn't run right, you can always open it up some - or throw on a Noveske KX3 to increase the gas pressure.
