Has there ever been a group of folks that have organized and sponsored these types of shooting competitions at AGC? Wondering why not, if there hasn't been.
No, there has not. I brought the idea up way back when I was on the board and it was shot down. The discipline was really popular at other places and it is sad that it didn't move forward. Times and attitudes have changed since then. If you want it, ask your trustee propose the idea at the AGC meeting. If there is enough interest, there may be hope.
Cowboy shooting popularity reached its peak around 2000. One of the largest venues we had for cowboy shooting was Fort Meade. After 9/11, it slowly dried up there because of the pain in the ass procedure to access the ranges. Thurmont used to have a pretty big turnout as did Sanners lake and AAF&G. I haven't been to Thurmont or Sanners in some time so I don't know active they are today. At AAF&G, we have maybe a dozen shooters at the cowboy matches.
I think IDPA made a dent in cowboy membership as it was much cheaper to get into and, if you only were interested in pistols, you didn't have to buy anything else. Out West where the ranges have much more area, they are probably still pretty active. Shooting from horseback on a real horse sure beats the wooden thing we had at Fort Meade.
