I live in the Stevenson section of Pikesville. Since moving in, there has been a regular solicitation by the community association to have residents chip in to buy security patrols of the neighborhood. I'm not seeing a need for it since I have only seen a patrol car once and it has been parked in front of a house for as long as I can remember. It also bugs me that the "stats" used to justify a security force show a level of crime/suspicious activity that outstrips the entire zip code of 21208 compared to police stats.

Does anyone live in this area and, if so, can you explain why there is an odd paranoia about crime in this area? The only thing I have ever heard is that we live close to the beltway and that there was a rash of burglaries many years ago. I am in year 3 of living here and the only crime I have seen is that someone walked their dog on my lawn and left a pile.

The community right at Stevenson Road and 695 has private security that works most nights (coming off of Old Court it's on the right as you get to 695).

It's just some old guy in a old beat up car sitting on the street and he drives around every hour or so.

There has been an on going issue for the past 2 years with certain communities right off the beltway in that area getting hit for stolen cars, overnight B&E's, and theft from parked cars.

A group will steal a car from the city or catch the MTA out and walk around looking for unlocked houses and cars all night. The same group have been arrested 2 or 3 times in the past year for it with the recovery of 5 or 6 (maybe more) cars taking from that neighborhood.

Depending on where exactly your community is it is likely affected by this group. Rather a security guard is going to be a deterrent or not is a different issue.

I will say that last time I looked at any of the "crime maps" they've been garbage. The only way to get accurate crime stats is to go through the police department directly. Have your HOA contact the police department directly and ask for statistics over a 5 year period to determine if it's needed or not.

I've seen the stats for the zip code and what the security company provides...I am living in little Afghanistan according to the "reports of shots fired" stat they offer as well the over "3,000" people escorted out of the area. The guy that is patrolling is likely not a part of the security operation. He may be one of the residents that drives around because his family lives in the area (maybe a neighbor of mine).

I cannot get myself to justify spending the amount of money that is being asked for an invisible patrol and ludicrously provided neighborhood stats. Shoot, I would patrol the area for 1/4 of what people are paying and give the same result.

The guy I mention is a security guard. He's in a marked security guard car and in a uniform. He "patrols" the area around Terrapin Road and and Old Forest Road. I've never seen him on the other side of the street.

The "stats" you see are not factual that's my point. There isn't anything you can Google to get accurate crime stats for your neighborhood. If it's not coming from the police department it's not factual.

I won't answer the merit of security guards but I can confirm that the area you are speaking of have had a series of spikes in theft of autos, theft from autos, and overnight burglaries. Rather or not that justifies the security guard to you or your neighborhood is up to you guys.
