It's a joke. Other states are laughing at us, or just feeling sorry. The state should have had working programs outlined and ready to be implemented for a variety of different regulatory options before they were ever brought before the senate or house committees.

O'Malley knew the classes would not be up and running in time. I'm sure he's laughing about it.
What they should have done was set a more reasonable (not that any of SB 281 is reasonable) effective date like Jan 2014.

How's he going to laugh when he's slapped with a huge lawsuit?

How's he going to like being the national poster-boy for Executive Incompetence?

I don't think much progress has been made on preparing the new training classes.

However, the law says the existing Hunter Safety course will meet the training requirement.

Do you see what will happen?

All the Hunter Safety classes will be booked solid with prospective handgun buyers. There will be waiting lists, and not enough openings . People who just want a hunting license will be unable to get one, because there won't be enough open slots in the classes.

Thus there will be a ripple effect. A lot of people who thought SB281 wouldn't effect them are going to find themselves very put out.

Can you provide the quote or reference to this?

    You mean about Hunter Safety?

Look at the law. It requires first time handgun buyers to have four hours of training, including live fire. Those classes don't exist yet.
Then it says the existing Hunter Safety classes will meet the requirement.

So what do you think will happen? There won't be enough slots for the new Handgun classes, so the existing Hunter Safety classes will be overwhelmed.

That's going to have a big ripple effect among the hunters who didn't care about SB281. A lot of kids won't be able to get their first hunting license.

This things going to hit right about the start of deer season, too.

Hunters were at the protest in february more than you will know.

It always hits right before deer season because everyone waits till the last possible minute to take the class. Most of the time it is the parents biting the bullet to make time for johnny or jill.

I don't mean to detract from those hunters who did what they could to fight the bill. But I know there were plenty who did nothing, just as there were plenty of other gun owners who did nothing.

DrmSparks told me a guy shooting milsurps at the AGC sneered at him about the fuss we were making. No one was banning his Mausers.

So if you have a current Hunter Safety card, you're exempt from having to take the training class, but still need to be fingerprinted?

What if you already own a handgun--are you exempt, or do you need to still take the training class?

    1) yes.. you are exempt... still need to pay the license and get finger printed.

    2) believe so.. but not 100% sure. but if you are exempt.. still need finger printed and pay the fee..

its Maryland.. land of the "free state" after all.:)

    Perfect.

Do a Utah CCW class, with the FL CCW Live Fire and you are set. In more ways that one. :)

MOM is going to make people get Utah and Fl CCW permits. :lol2:

Only covered on MD Shooters about 487,000 times.

IF YOU ALREADY OWN A REGULATED FIREARM YOU ARE EXEMPT FROM THE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS.

And how about those of us that are transplants to MD, and our hand guns aren't registered. We legally owned them prior to comming here, and we legally own them now, but there is no record in any MD database that we are current handgun owners.

That's not necessarily so. The Utah course if not specifically listed in the law. The MSP gets to decide which if any courses will meet the training requirements.
