I could fly an A-10 with training but the government/DOD discriminates against me because of my age.

All this airplane talk brought back an old joke from many years ago.

A fighter on a training mission took on a fuel load from a tanker and then pulled up on the tankers wing. He told the tanker pilot to "watch this". He then proceeded to roll around the tanker returning back to his port wing. He then radioed back saying " I'll bet you wish you could do that". The Tanker driver said " I can do something that you could never do." The fighter pilot laughed and said "this I got to see."

The tanker pilot then said "Ok, watch this." Both aircraft continued flying on the same heading and the fighter pilot didn't see any movement from the tanker. After he gave him about 15 minutes, he called back and said " I don't have all day, when are you going to do something."

To that the tanker pilot said " I already did. I went back and took a leak and then got a cup of hot coffee and a donut."

I can't print the fighter pilot's reply since this is a family web site.

You must enter pilot training before you turn 30. It takes just over a year to get to pilot training from the time you are selected.

why does the pic of the A-10 appear above clouds with the gear down?
    That just looks strange.

It's a staged pic...has 10-15 degrees of flap down, too. Would love to hitch a ride in one.

I logged over 1,075 combat hours on two tours in Vietnam in the 60s and into 1970 when I finished flying with the 146th Avn Co out of Long Thanh North. We were the Snoopers and we did some electronic listening in and around Saigon, Cu Chi, the Michelin Rubber Plantation and the Cambodian border west of Saigon and up to Tay Ninh.

Boring work for the most part, but we produced some nice intel for the lads at MACV G2. NSA was establishing our search areas for us. Between my tours in Vietnam, I instructed in the Army's basic FW program at Fort Stewart GA and taught formation flying to 32 students as part of getting them ready for duty in Vietnam...also taught them how to land in cow pastures and on GA red clay dirt roads.

    Were you flying RC-12's?

Probably not until after his Vietnam tours. C-12 platforms didn't enter military service until '74.

146th Avn Co had RU-1A, RU-6A, RU-8D, CV-2B, and/or RU-21D @ Long Thanh North (based on interwebs). Apologies to both in advance if my research was in error.

Thanks for your service Lew and John :patriot:

And since I finally posted in this thread, I'l go on record as saying, "A-10's are bad-@ss"!

It's in storage now, due to the reconstruction of the main vehicle entrance, but there was an RU-8D at the National Vigilance Park @ the NSA National Cryptologic Museum.

    The was also a C-130 and a EA-3B.

I remember when the 130 was flown in. They did it in typical covert style, in the middle of the night without any fanfare. On topic, has any young board member applied for the A-10 slots?

Surely a staged pic but I don't think it has any flaps. The A10 flaps don't quite extend to the ailerons. There is little if any bit jutting out there. More likely the decelerons are active. The A10 ailerons can split open like a book to control yaw or brake.

FWIW, the mains don't fully retract so it can belly land in case of gear failure (eventuality if you are shot at as much as it is.) Pic shows decelerons open too. (technically a trail dragger in this config:))

If some of you guys would like to get the feel of combat aerobatics (without joining up), here is a place where you can go.

http://www.flyfighterjet.com/fly-l-39-in-florida-usa I know there are others around the country also. Old guys, go see a FAA Flight Surgeon first.

While that looks kick ass I thing I'd rather fly a P-51 Mustang first. (Although it's much more money)
