Anyone have any problem with the nipples and putting them back into the cylinder? I have always had a brass frame and spare cylinder and bought a steel framed 1858 and just shot it today. I removed all the nipples and rinsed all in 180 degree water as i always do. The spare cylinder take nipples fine and the one that came with the Pietta cylinder don;t want to go back in. I removed all nipples from the spare and none of them want to thread in a few cylinder.

    Anyone have a solution.
    1. Pietta 1858 Remington New Navy - M6x0.75, so anyone thing I should buy a tap and make sure the threads are clean? I ordered a set.
    2. buy new nipples?

You may be putting them in at the wrong angle. 1858 nipples sit at a different angel than Colt cylinders. I use a piece of clear tubing (from Lowes) to hold the nipple and it makes for easier installation.

I can't get the threads to restart on them. The brass frame no problems, spare cylinder bought from Cabelas, no problem. New cyclder in new gun they three went in and were tight, and there won't start

I ordered the m6 x .75 tap to just check it.

messed with it again and nipples that won't start in the new cylinder run into the old one and nothing works in the new cylinder. Three holes work great and three are binding up. Looks like shotty threads to be to check with the tap when it gets here tuesday.

Sorry to hear that. I just finished shooting my Pietta '58 and Colt 1851. Good dirty fun.

I was going to shoot my Crockett rifle tomorrow but I think I'll go fishing before the next storm come up. ;)

When I clean my cylinders, I loosen the nipples a turn or so. After cleaning, I spray the whole thing with WD40 and then tighten up the nipples. I then wipe down the whole pistol with a silicone cloth. When I go to use them again, I just squirt some brake cleaner through the nipples instead of wasting six caps clearing the nipples. The red spray straw fits the nipples perfectly.

Can't figure out if I'm disappointed or relieved, given the title of this thread...

    How do you clean yours?

Dawn and very hot water. Bottle brush and cue tip to finish. Bore light to see that the passage is open and clear. Wipe everything down with an oily rag.

Ya gotta figure the limited amount of things that the old timers did when these were new to keep them functioning.

I coat the threads with anti-seize, and then turn the nipple by hand counterclockwise until I feel the threads engage. When that happens I start to tighten it. Then I finish screwing it in with a nipple wrench and be done.

I use a paper clip as a nipple pick instead of wasting caps.

I sort of do the same thing. I always put grease on the threads always before replacing them in the cylinders.

I learned to do this the hard way.
