Question silly new-owner question(bolt stuck open on brand new gun)

So, I just purchased my very first firearm, a new highpoint 995 carbine and I'm embarrassed to say I can't figure out how to get the bolt to close.

I rented one to try it out before buying, but when I got home and opened the box on the one I purchased, I couldn't figure out how to get the bolt to close.

Is this normal for a new gun? What should I do?

Is there an empty magazine in it? That may be locking the bolt back (on purpose).

Not familiar with a Highpoint 995 carbine...though is there a bolt release somewhere on the receiver? Or after clearing the weapon, can you pull the slide back a little more and pull the trigger and let the bolt ride forward?

I may be remembering another value priced gun, but I think you pull the bolt handle out, away from the receiver. IIRC, there is a round recess that it locks into by pushing the handle in. You might have to pull back slightly too, to release spring tension.

I could be wrong...don't force anything

DISENGAGE HOLD OPEN: To disengage the hold open - remove empty magazine, then grasp the operating handle and pull backward until you hear an audible click. Release the bolt will return it to the closed position.

Its either holding open on an empty mag or you need to pull the charging handle out of the notch in the receiver cover that manually holds the bolt open

If this doesn't work post a picture. Hi Points are super simple to use and work on so i’m sure you'll figure it out

That is the one action I would NOT expect to drop the bolt. If pulling the trigger drops the bolt, it may be a problem.

Confirm the gun is unloaded, magazines are unloaded, and no ammunition is nearby.

With no magazine in the gun,

...pull the bolt back and release it. Does it stay locked back, or does it slam shut again?

With an EMPTY magazine in the gun,

...pull the bolt back and release it. Does it lock open?

If it does lock open on an empty magazine,

...remove the magazine. Does the bolt stay open? Now pull back slightly on the bolt handle and release it. Does the bolt close?
