I recently joined the Meade Rod and Gun club and plan on going to the Range this Sunday.

The information on line is a little sparse so I have a few questions:

It looks like we enter through the back gate on range rd in Piney orchard at 7AM. I assume that the we all leave the range as a group also?

Is there are some sort of wooden target frame on Range 1? you just staple your target into the frame?

Since leaving the Range is controlled, are there bathrooms on range?

    Thanks!

I don't know the gate procedures as I dropped my membership some time ago. As far as bathrooms, they have them at the NSA Range Officer building and I believe the target storage building. Range 1 has pits and target lifters. You mount your target to a frame and then lift the frame into the firing position.

I was told at one time, that DOI was opening the gate several times so people could leave but that may not be so today.

Please report back on your experience.

I did go after all, quick range report....

The Gate opens around 7AM, your ID will be checked and you need to be on the list of the club you joined.

Shooting starts at 8AM with periodic breaks to go down range to change targets.

the Rifle ranges have massive 5footx 5 foot targets with cardboard on them, you staple your target to that.

Gate opened at 11 and 1 to leave.

    There are porta potties.

I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has.

How long does the gate stay open? 7am is the only time you can go? Is it open on Sunday only?

They open the gates at 7am and sometime later in the day which varies and it typically around Noon or later. You have to leave as a "club". They won't open the gates to accommodate everyone's schedule.

Ft Meade Rod and Gun is the hunting and fishing club and FT Meade Rifle and Pistol is the shooting club. My experience was that Ft Meade Rifle and Pistol was the bigger of the two clubs and was on the range more.

The Rod & Gun (RG) club does hold hunter safety, fishing derbies, CMP matches and such; but they do hold range sessions that are enjoyable. They typically meet 1-2 times a month with some of the sessions reserved for events like CMP and such.

As you mentioned they definitely don't shoot as much as Rifle & Pistol (RP), but they're a different demographic. I belong to both and my opinion is that one is more casual while the other bumps it up a few notches. Just depends on how you want to spend your day shooting.

    Join both!

Is the Ft Meade Rifle and Pistol Club open to new members? It's a haul from Gaithersburg but I can make the time for 1-2 trips per month.

Their website says "The club is organized primarily for the benefit of Department of Defense employees – both civilian, military, and their families. We admit others on a space available basis."

I'm no longer DoD but a USMC veteran.

I didn't say you had to be, just that Ft Meade Rifle and Pistol had to maintain at least 50% DOD personnel. When the ratio goes below this, they usually close off membership.

I don't know about the rules at Ft Meade Rod and Gun.

Wasn't saying you did, just letting everyone and anyone that may be interested in joining that it's not a requirement.

I tried membership there for one year and went a total of twice. The micro-managed range rules made it not worth the time. Now I live where you can just drive to the edge of town and set up targets. We have our own steel that we place at 100-1000 yards.

Would also like to know this ^^^

I'm a member of Meade R&P but haven't been in a while. Last time I went it was a cluster F and I Spent more time in the pits pointing out holes on targets for the other shooters then I did shooting. The RO's (if you ask) will allow steel if you bring your own.

I’m a member of MRPC, they have solved the Gov’t employee issue by having two types of memberships. Both types enjoy the full benefits of the club and access to the Meade DOI Ranges.
