I picked up these two Colt Commando revolvers this week. They each have a fair amount of finish wear but are mechanically solid...bank vault lockup, smooth trigger pulls and pristine barrels and chambers...

One didn't have its original plastic stocks but instead was wearing Pachmayr Gripper rubber stocks but I had a spare set of correct ones for it. When I removed the Packmayrs I found this stamped into the backstrap...

From documentation I've seen only limited numbers of Commandos were marked this way but often had the Ordnance Bomb acceptance mark or the inspector's initials...this has both plus the "US Property" markings....that must make it a fairly rare piece to have all three.

The other Commando has "DPD" plus an inventory or rack number on the butt which means it was a police department piece at some point in its life. I've already ordered factory letters to find out where they were sent during the war.

I've always felt the Colt Commando is a much under appreciated and undervalued wartime handgun in the market. Commandos aren't rare (about 50k were made) but they aren't nearly as common nor made anywhere near the numbers the S&W Victory revolvers were. While the S&W's were generally sent to the Brits or to American military services the Commandos were purchased for domestic police and industrial plant guard use, railroad inspectors and the like though a pretty fair number did go the the military and the OSS. I have two other Commandos and one went to a police department in Michigan and the other to the Maritime Commission for issuance to the Merchant Marine.

    All four Commandos...

Street value on Colt Commandos for a decent to really good specimen is in the $500-$700 range...maybe more with good provenance and excellent condition. The prices on Gunbroker and Guns International are ridiculous. I'd love to see them worth that, but as I said, I think they're undervalued in the market and I think if anyone wants a collection of American WWII firearms you need a Commando as well as a S&W Victory.

It is finally finished. My Charter Arms Bulldog conversation to a live fire Blade Runner PKD Detective Special. The dark blue pistol is a non-firing model. I bought it to have something to compare.

    Enjoy!

Years ago I had a Montgomery County Police trade-in S&W Model 10 heavy barrel. I ended up selling it during a period of extreme poverty...dumb move. That was one sweet revolver. I would have loved to have been able to keep the Model 64 I was issued for most of my time in law enforcement...I picked it out personally when it was shipped in new...the most accurate of the batch we received. I was a S&W armorer and slicked it up even better. Since it was agency owned I had to leave it behind when I went to a different agency. When that agency transitioned to Sigs they destroyed every revolver they had...they all went into the furnace to comply with Bill Clinton's executive order that no federal law enforcement firearm can be traded in where they might end up in the civilian market. Such a waste.

Friends-Been helping the family wade through our great uncles collection to help him off set some medical bills. We had thought he only had "Smith and Wesson's". Well you can see two of the three are in the below pictures..BUT when I open up an original S/W box for a supposedly S/W from 1969.. out pops a Colt in .38 from 1971. I am working on curating these for potential sale..but I thought I would share these here for eye candy.

The two on the left are mine (S&W 586 and Ruger Security Six), the others (S&W Model 65 and Ruger SP101) are loaners from a buddy of mine.
