    I just had this idea.

There has to be people out there with raw land they aren't using that are willing to rent it out to shoot on.

    Anyone ever hear of this?

The problem is the modifications YOU would need to make to the land to create a safe backstop tall enough to stop fliers...

The backstop needs to be very tall & wide for longer distances...

And then there are the local & county regulations about shooting...

And your liability $$$ if rounds DO get past the backstop...

The NRA has plans for a backstop on their website...

Yeah, I wouldn't do anything unsafe, an I'm assuming land owners wouldn't either.

I'm imagining land with a natural backstop.

The potential for liability lawsuits will stop most people. Save the rent payments until you can buy your own.

certainly can't hurt to ask, same deal as trying to find land to hunt on. with liability and lead, odds probably are pretty low.

Ive been going through this for the last two years and some of it on my own property. The biggest problem with shooting on raw land is the lead contamination. For raw land, it gets into the Clean Water Act, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. If a farmer or land owner allows even a tiny portion of their land to become contaminated with lead, it can become a major headache and a huge expense. Been there, tried this, save yourself some frustrations and go shoot at an established indoor or outdoor range.

I rent my cabin out to hunters quite a bit in the fall. I have had people ask if they can just rent it to target shoot. I don't feel comfortable with that idea. I mean, sure the majority of the people on here are safe shooters, But, I really don't know peoples level of responsibility.
Shooting a round or two at game is one thing. Lighting off a few thousand rounds at a time is a whole different thing.

Natural backstops still aren’t necessarily safe. Shooting at a hill without a backstop andnthe round can still ricochet if it hits a rock on the surface or just under the soil and skip right over the hill. A steep enough hill is just as likely to be very rocky, possibly tossing ricochets or spalled rock right back at you.

Something like Hicock45’s setup I am really hoping he owns the land for at least a good quarter mile behind his shooting hill because his is the exact setup likely to lead to the occasional ricochet that’s going to go flying over the top of the hill.

You really want to try to build a back stop for pretty much anything you are shooting at to be safe. Or it needs to be in fairly dense woods and a hill.

I did some research earlier in my career on the design for outdoor ranges. The expectation is NOT that no round ever leaves the range. If I remember the design guidance it said something along the lines of ..."no projectile shall leave the range until the jacket is stripped, the velocity has been reduced and the trajectory has been adjusted significantly upward.."

they achieved that by installing sand berms at the rear and overhead baffles between the firing line and the first line of targets. The overhead baffles consisted of 1/4" steel plate sandwiched between 2 layers of lumber. The baffles and berm were arranged so that there was no clear line of sight below the baffle and above the berm. Regular maintenance consisted of returning the top of the berm to its design heigh abd replacing the wood on the baffles.

Who is going to reclaim the lead after you are done shooting?

Who is going to perform the pH tests before you shoot, to make sure the lead doesn't seep into the water supply?
