Starting my first AR build. Picked up an HBAR from Franklin Armory. Looks like there's some white gunk (?) around the inside of the barrel (receiver end). Any thoughts what that may be before I reach out to Franklin Armory? Should I just scrape it out and not worry about it?

    See picture. Thanks all.

They do some sort of Salt Bath Nitride process on the chamber. Is the white material crystalline in nature or soft?

Yeah, crystalline. I guess it was just some salt water left in there that evaporated.

    Thanks!

The barrel is slightly chamfered at the back where it’s pressed into the barrel extension. That slight recess probably just had some residue that may not have been visible during initial inspection, but some crystallization occurred after the moisture evaporated.

I would just use a water soaked q-tip to swab it out. Then just wipe a thin film of oil in the breech when your done.

I think FA has a decent reputation in the industry. I doubt they actually make the barrels themselves, but they may cut and chamber them. I’m not sure.

Make sure you post your build. There is a thread for AR build pics somewhere on the board.
