I had an old piece of metal deck from the scrap heap.
Wanted to see how well penetration occurred with .224 and .312 fmj's.
You can see where only one 556 round did not completely penetrate the deck plate probably because the round struck next to a previous hit which may have slightly hardened the surrounding area of the metal + it was right on one of the treads.

Interestingly enough, the impacts are nearly the same diameter from the front but can more easily be distinguished from the rear.
These were 55 and 174g pills @ the 300yd butt.

Bullet jackets remained from both rounds at the point of impact with very little
evidence of post impact exterior spalling and no sharp petals remaining at the rear.

I had a chance to shoot a piece of 1-1/2" laminated Lexan from a bank window cut out. The guy that had it, shot it with a full power 44 Magnum and it stopped the round, with the back of the bullet flush with the face of the Lexan. I shot it with a 30-06 and a 7.62 X 39 FMJ, they went right thru without spalling the back side. A .243 Win. soft point hunting bullet went straight through with the same results. the holes look like it had been shot with a 22. I've shot 1/4' and maybe thicker steel with the same results as Doco.

Yes, get a thicker car door. The arm rest is not going to help you as much as you already think from what you learned on TV.

Paul Harrell did a very interesting video on this a year or two back. He tested several calibers on car doors, engine block, etc. Results as you might expect, but Paul's videos are interesting to watch, regardless. One of the best gun YouTubers out there.

MM Jr. "plinked" the pistol spinner with the bolt gun (55g Georgia Arms "canned heat" .223 reloads acquired in Chantilly many years ago ...)

Results were ... predictable. He will be welding some patches.

Material is 1/4" thick, and no doubt a Chinese blended-alloy.

When I did my carbine course at BSR, there was a car on the range that they used for demo during counter terrorism training.

They shot side to side on the car with 5.56, 7.62x39, 9mm, and 12 ga slugs.

ALL of them penetrated through the middle (both doors and interior pieces) and rear (trunk area) of the car.

They did not penetrate through the car when they hit the engine block.

If you are going to hide behind a car, the ONLY place that gives cover is the engine.

If you are on one side in the rear, hide behind a wheel. Hope you have steel wheels and not alloy. More cover.

No, a steel wheel won’t stop a rifle round, but if the round strikes one side and the other, with the body in between it likely won’t penetrate all the way through. Especially with the suspension components in the way.

Also looks like fun. Some day I’d love to get some stuff to shoot and some black tips.

A car is a bullet magnet. To easy to skip rounds under as well. Just try to keep the car between you and the threat as you're running away from it.

Thats what we used to do. Run away, preferably with the front end of the truck in the way working night time outages in the city. When the shooting started it was beat feet.

One time a guy was waving around a nickle plated 45 or something similar at the end of the alley.

He came out of the end row when we had the lights out for an extended period. ( 3-4 hrs something like that.) Mad as hell. Hot outside like it is now. Another lineman was just getting ready to close in the tap when he was carrying on and waving his piece.
Right in the middle of the rant, John closed the fuse and picked everything up for the entire block.
Once he realized what happened he said, all the while waving this gat around, "And hook my cable Tv up too Mother F&%er."

Somebody looked up and hollered, make sure he gets HBO too! :lol2:
