I read about a new cartridge called the 300 PRC. It's supposed to be similar to a .300 Win Mag, but I don't know enough about long distance shooting to understand what's the impetus to have this new cartridge. What's the purpose of this cartridge? It seems to me there are already enough different cartridges to suit any type of application.

    No belt for starters.

It's optimized to fit in a long/magnum action with high BC bullets and not have the bullet in the case where powder should be.

    It's a pretty good cartridge.

There's 30 Nosler, 300 RUM, 300 Norma (improved), etc. etc.

A lot of comparisons are done with constraints that are easily overcome (factory chamber throats, Saami OALs). Keep that in mind when reading comparisons. A 300 RUM throated for longer bullets loaded at 4.000" is pretty common. Now what do you get with that 100+ grains of powder.... ehhhh

ETA: There's no way I'd get a 300 WM at this point.

Headspacing on the shoulder instead of a belt, stacks in a mag better, and supposedly can help center the case better in the chamber. Main benfit is the head height, or how far the bullet can stick out of the case, and still fit in a standard magnum action, 1.12" vs .72 for most older Magnums. Gives it a huge advantage pushing 200+ grain bullets compared to other 30cal cartridges around the same case capacity. Ends up being a relatively efficient case without being too overbore, so supposedly isn't much harder on barrels than a 300 win mag.

product of outstanding marketing. See how many companies produce brass.
Lots of cartridges have been introduced with all sorts of claims of being better only to disappear or hard to get brass for. the WSSMs, 6 Hagar, 7 SAUM, etc. IF the military does adopt it, it will take off. Otherwise, time will tell. But it does look interesting if it stays.

    Good Luck

    Where they send me.
The DoD is pushing to get longer range rounds out there. 300WM info out now that goes past SAAMI specs but they are looking for more.

They want to have more reach than the guy shooting at them, which is a good thing. I'm no longer that guy so I'll stick with what I have.
