BALTIMORE -- An alligator-like reptile has been captured in the Patapsco River, just south of Baltimore.

Natural Resources Police spokesman Sgt. Art Windemuth said the 2.5-foot to 3-foot caiman was found Tuesday afternoon near Glen Burnie.

Windemuth said a teen who, earlier this week, spotted the reptile native to Central and South America at his favorite fishing area returned and spotted it again. The teen went home and returned with a piece of chicken tied to a string. He caught the caiman and kept it there until authorities arrived. (... .)

CARROLLWOOD, Md. -- State officials announced the capture of an alligator-type animal in Baltimore County Friday evening.

Officials identified the creature as a caiman crocodilus or speckled caiman, which is a reptile native to South America. The word caiman is a Spanish term for any alligator or crocodile.

Officers used spotlights and large nets to search the waters for the reptile. According to a DNR spokeswoman, several NRP officers and a Baltimore County officer caught the 27½-inch reptile late Friday night.(....)

They thought it was a caiman, but it was actually an alligator. Poor bugger was saved by the kid who saw it, but the hook he used to catch it is stuck in his throat now and they can't feed it yet because of it (as of this morning anyways).

Global warming? I don't think so. As with the snake-heads, I think it's just a case of someone(people) letting a pet go in the sewage or waterways. Even if the crock is from the South, Manitees have been making it up this far for quite some time... Way before the global warming scare started.

He wouldn't survive the winter, someone just let their pet go in the river. People have hooked pet pirhana and pacu from time to time in the Potomac in summer, but they never make the winter either. Of course in southern VA?
it might be possible, which is why pet stores in VA can't legally sell pirhana (but many of them do anyway).
