So which splats are you harvesting? I shot a particularly obnoxious squirrel while deer hunting once (it had tried to climb my leg during the fox squirrel rut) at 10 yds with a .308. 100% jelly innards with a heart shot. Cleaning was a pain but quarters were intact. Only time that I've quartered a squirrel.

Depends.. i use both.. if i want a lazy hunt i screw my waterfowl choke to my shotty and sit in a tree stand. If i need some exercise, i walk and stalk with a suppressed 10/22 ..

I usually get my 6.. chicken fried squirrel is one of my favs.. it's also great with pan gravy over waffles..

Any mix with gravy is GTG. Squirrel pot pie is still a favorite in this house.

I’ve found that my favorite set up is a 12 ga with a full choke and I use old turkey loads that I have left over from 20 years ago.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes a .22 - I like my Stevens 418 single shot most for that. Sometimes my grand-dad's old 16g SxS. I killed my first squirrel with that a long time ago.

And sometimes my .40 flintlock. That one's a bit much for squirrel hunting specifically - really needs to be head shots only. But since .40 is the minimum caliber for deer, there are a few days when I can take a "lazy" approach where I'm not hunting really hard for one thing. I just enjoy being in the woods with that particular flintlock rifle and shoot whatever crosses my path.

Just like everyone else, .22 rifle or a shotgun. it all depends how many leaves are on the trees, and the mood I’m in.
Now, if I really want to enjoy my time in the woods, I take my treeing dog ,Sam. Not always the most productive way to hunt them, by it sure is fun.

When I was a youngster, I received a Savage Model 24, .22/.410 O/U for Christmas. Took many squirrels, rabbits, and a few quail with that gun.

Latter on when I was in High School, I bought a Marlin Model 81, scoped with a Tasco 4X. The Marlin became my preferred gun for squirrels and small varmints. Great shooter but haven't had it out in several years. Marlin made a version of the 81 for Sears, JC Penny, and Western Auto. Most of those were made with maple stocks and not walnut, as the Savage version.
