Going on this weekend, I might go up and look through the flea market. I bought some 303 shot shells there one time and there was some other outdoor related stuff. I like to get the old kitchen knives for cutting up meat because they always seem to disappear during deer season.

There is usually some firearms related stuff in the flea market. There is one fellow who is usually located at one of the first areas on the far right as you enter the flea market area who has some interesting things. This year, he had a couple of Browning A-5's. A Swiss 1878 Vetterli and a few other assorted sporting arms. He also has some ammo and reloading components and dies. His posted prices are very negotiable (the stickers represent prices from whatever going out of business store or dealer he bought them from) especially on the hard to move unusual calibers.

I've got a friend that has a few steam tractors. I've always said I wanted to go, but I never seem to make it.

Danm, I keep blinking and missing that one. Have to see if I can make Berryville the end of the month.

I think the Wheat Threshermans in Federalsburg is the first week of August this year. Its just off 404 about 4 miles straight down 313. I always liked that one better even though its smaller. In the past I always managed to pick up some gator wrenches and antique line tools, like old canvas nose bags and two and three sheave blocks for stick work.

And I spent the weekend at work. Oh well, there's always next year...

What tends to show up at steam events around here? Is it mostly agricultural, or does anyone bring vintage construction equipment?

I have a major soft-spot for earth moving equipment from 1900 to 1960, you know, the awkward, slapdash, borderline prototype-looking stuff that literally built this nation as we know it in an amazingly short timeframe.

Meanwhile, in the 2010s we have GPS-guided bulldozers and graders and Tier IV compliant loaders, all just to take the better part of a decade to replace an interchange or widen a highway. It's sometimes sickening to think of how far we've fallen.

If you missed Tuckahoe and like construction equipment mark your calendar for Thresherman's Reunion at Rough and Tumble Engineer's Historical Association in Kinzer PA this August 16-19 Wednesday through Saturday. This year the Reunion is dedicated to construction equipment. At R&T they have steam and gas tractors, stationary steam, steam railroads, hit and miss gas engines, steam and gas construction equipment including steam shovel, steam roller, steam lawn mower, a line shaft machine shop, sawmill, shingle mill, blacksmith shop, etc. They even have one end of the grounds dedicated to construction where they dig big holes and bulldoze them back so they can dig them again.

Here is a link to the web site:

Thanks for the heads-up! You had me at the midcentury cats and that cable shovel in the background. I might have to come back early from vacation to catch this...
