I have some 3/4 inch plywood, but I like the pallet idea and sand filled cans.If you have a solid backstop ( I use a pallet and fill it in with stone), and your rifle has a good moderator, you shouldn't have any issues. My backstop stops everything including .22 long rifle but I am actually shooting at a bullet trap so I can collect the lead for making cast bullets. My farther targets (50 yards) I was using metal target traps but they are too loud so I switched to using plastic and metal cans filled with moist sand. When they are all shot up, I empty them and reclaim the lead and reuse the sand. At 50 yards I only use 1/2 inch plywood backstops as non of my pellets will penetrate at that distance.
There’s a lot of factors, I’ve seen pellets ricochet off plywood. I’ve seen guys who live in townhomes take a Storage container and fill it with rubber mulch, plywood on the back. Then tape targets to the lid.
