I find the choices of brands mind numbing. I was given a list of parts to accumulate but there are 10.5” barrels for example that range from $100-$400. Just want to build something of equivalent quality to my Ruger AR.

Look up the Ruger 8516 Complete Lower... I have one comes with superior trigger and the buffer tube allows you to slide the sba3 brace right on. I used the stock it comes with for my Ruger Ar555 rifle nice stock but anyway you can put the sba3 brace on the lower and make it into a pistol. I bought a complete upper from Palmetto State Armory threw on top and it runs flawless.

I wonder if the way it comes configured from the factory (with a stock) makes it a rifle lower and therefore cannot be configured to a pistol, even with a brace?

It can't be turned to a pistol since it has a stock directly from the factory. If it just had the rifle buffer tube you could still do it since they make adjustable braces that use them, but the stock makes it a rifle.

Edit: Added to the fact that it is marketed and sold as a rifle based on the title on the Ruger site: "Ruger® AR-556® Standard Autoloading Rifle Model 8516"

google is your friend, I am not.
Of all the mind numbing choices for the rifle, my 0.02 are the 4 most important for your project (in no particular order): lower, trigger, barrel, and furniture. The Ruger stripped lower is here: https://www.brownells.com/rifle-par...pped-lower-receiver-5-56-black-prod98024.aspx. Any upper will do I'm sure.

The furniture is magpul and SB Tactical® SBA3 brace, easy enough to buy.

trigger: Ruger trigger is data is here: https://ruger.com/micros/AR-Trigger/index.html I would say this profile looks to me like the 2-stage Geissele 2 Stage (G2S) https://geissele.com/geissele-2-stage-trigger.html. There might be some ALG or other options here too but look for a 2-stage with ~ 4.5 lbs. It also seems as though you can get the Ruger trigger directly although the web page is a little unclear on that.

That leaves the barrel. again, my 0.02 is that since you are going with delta ring and gas block front sight config, in a pistol, you dont need the high end $300 match grade 5R button rifles target crown 223 Wylde barrel. No point without free-floating the barrel, and even then its a pistol. The Ruger barrel is likely much much better than the $84.95 Brownells special which is crap. If it were me I'd choose the $150 Faxon SOCOM 10.5" (https://www.brownells.com/rifle-par...ge_1=AKK_5xzzx56+mm+NATO&avs|Length_1=10xzzx5). It might be a tad better than the Ruger barrel to be honest - I have a few Faxon barrels I am very happy with them. There might be some other choices in this range. Besides barrel quality, the main to watch out for is make sure you can put that front sight gas block on.

The Ruger 8516 is transferred as "other" with a 7 day waiting period. It is not considered a rifle until it is attached to an upper greater then 16" so if you get the "complete lower" change the stock to a brace and then attach it to an pistol upper it is a legal "pistol"

There is the link to the thread i started when i built my pistol with the Ruger 8516...

    Edited:
BTW Post#9 in the link above was from an attorney that works for Ruger... Dont take his advice as legal advice but he did say he can ASSURE that the lower left the ruger facility as a reciever not a pistol or rifle.

Funny 3 out of 4 I picked the exact same thing, haven’t decided on trigger/lower parts kit yet.
