Man, I would keep both... Why sell/trade any gun unless it doesn't work properly... I would save for the AR and keep shooting the Garand as well.. Heck when you get the AR take both to the range to shoot.

I was in the same boat last year, I wanted an AR bad but didn't like spending all at once. I bought a complete DPMS lower for $200 one month. Two months later I got a Stag flattop 16" for $485. A month after that I got a Bushnell Holosight for $150. Earlier this year I picked up a handguard rail system, forward grip, sling, Surefire light, and compact green laser. A year later it's all done. Total investment of $1100 spread out over time.

I already have an AR, so if you sell me your Garand, then I'll have both. 
If I run across a good functioning, good shooting M1A, at a good price, I might be tempted

Any semi auto gun that isn't box fed is outdated. It is like using a single action only revolver for self defense. It will shoot, but why use it?
I really think you should sell the M1, and I will gladly take it off your hands. Just send me an email with price and place for transaction. My safe and guns will love the company of the M1, and you will enjoy the AR of your choice.

But the Garand will turn that poodle's cover into concealment.
