Will be in OC for a few days next week.I plan on fishing off the jetty.I have never caught a toug but that is what I hope to catch. Will be using sandcrabs as bait.

Any tips on the best way to catch one?
Size weights? Size hooks? Best tide?

Togs love to hide near rocks and run into them when hooked. When I was younger, we used old auto spark plugs for sinkers and bought tins of 100 hooks for $1. My point is, don't use expensive rigging as you will loose it. Crabs are their favorite food, so you will definitely get bites. 3/0 to 5/0 Blackfish hooks will work, hook the crab through the back legs so they stay alive. You will need a sturdy 6 to 7 foot rod as you can catch some 4 to 6 pound fish. When it hits, set it fast and keep your line tight and your rod tip high. If you don't, it will head for the rocks.

Good luck, they are fine catching and good eating.

Great post! Somebody knows the jetty.

If you're not losing rigs, you're not catching tog!

Sand fleas will work also. Get plenty hooks and sinkers and then get some more. We use 3 oz sinkers I believe. You'll need to be able to break or cut the line when you're snagged. Be careful the rocks can be very slippery. Great tasting fish! Good luck.

Don't walk on any rocks with any growth at all. They used to make special shoes for fishing on rocks but I haven't seen them in some time.

I know this might seem a bit overboard but, if you have an inflatable PFD, wear it. It is easy to slip on rocks. :sad20:
