Guys who own Beretta 96s- how do you like them? I’ve heard they are very sweet shooting guns, even though they are in fo-tay. Any comments and or pics are welcome.

How hard are mags to get?

I bought a lightly used 96A1 because the orig owner had replaced some of the bits w/ stainless to make it two-tone. I liked the look and had been wanting a 92A1. The bbl was black but I didn't care as I I wasn't going to use it anyway... IMO .40 is silly but the 96 slide works w/ a 92 bbl I got barsto to custom thread one of their stainless 9mm barrels in proper M13.5x1LH (like any euro gun would have). Now looks much better. Though I really want to replace the grips w/ natural aluminum ones to complete the look. Works great as a suppressor host as a 92.

So while I think .40 is silly, it really is two guns in one. Its heavy so it shoots anything easily. Simple bbl swap and you're running suppressed 9mm. I have bought exactly one box of 40 in my life and it was to test this gun before I bought the 9 bbl. Weight is it's only real drawback. I wouldn't want it as a carry piece, but I don't do that so its a great shooting gun.

    Mags are easy to get.

I have a 90-two which is 40 cal, it’s a little more snappy than my 92 but not much. I haven’t made any mods to the gun. A lot of the 92 upgrade parts will fit.
I had no trouble getting mags, new or used.

For real? A 92 barrel drops right in and functions? That’s pretty freaking awesome, I wish the Glock 22/17 were like that.

Yes. The 40 base is ~0.9mm larger in diameter so as long as the extractor is in good shape it will still work great. The rim thicknesses are basically identical too. If you buy a new locking block for the 9 barrel you don't have to swap any parts and can go back and forth in seconds. The 40 mags will even feed 9mm but the lips appear SLIGHTLY different so maybe not as reliable? Some say its no problem but I just bought real 92 mags when I got extras so don't have much experience with that.

FYI, You can't go the other way (put a 96 bbl in a 92 slide) as the 40 won't headspace in the smaller slide correctly.

Edit: the Glock 17/22 is a bbl diameter problem right? I'm sure someone makes thicker conversion bbls for the 22 to run 9mm (or sleeve a stock 17 bbl?) I wouldn't know as I only have the 17;)

Not just barrel. You also need a new slide, which contains the breechface. The 9MM breechface is smaller than .40, so a .40 wouldn't go into battery with a 9MM slide, and the .40 slide's extractor didn't reliably work with a 9MM case for me when I swapped barrels.

I have a 20+ year old 96 that I recently bought a Vertec slide and 9MM barrel for so I can shoot 9MM with it. Nothing wrong with the gun in .40, but 9MM recoil is less and I can make accurate follow-on shots more rapidly.

As mentioned above, the feed lips on .40 vs 9mm mags are different. I haven't tried interchanging mags with the wrong caliber to see how it affects feeding.

96D Border Marshall. Less than 300 rounds down the bore.

Rarely gets shot, as I only shoot it 1 of 2 ways - like a boss, or like I have parkinsons. I love and hate it, but as it's one of the guns inherited from my dad, it ain't going anywhere.

I sold my 92fs cause I couldn't shoot it. Would pattern like an SBS at 10 yards. Might've just not fit my hands well, but I gave up trying after a few thousand rounds.

92 cost me a chrony. Pulled a shot low, went right above the LCD screen - stopped before exiting.
