We've done that in the past, and I think there is a very old thread on here someplace about it. Poor man's shotgun slug, but with durability and potential safety issues.

I was told by an old time waterfowler that they were originally used to flush rafted ducks that settled on the water out of normal shotgun range. Unsporting for sure, and likely illegal, but a credible story.

Threads here , and many other venues.

Yes it was done in the Old Days. In the 1930s when people needed deer meat , and were poor enough to only have one box of shells, it was resorted to.

Modern experements report trial and error to obtain desired results. It is potentially dangerous.

If you want an experenent to play with under controled conditions , use your best adult judgement. For actual using , Foster style slugs are safer, more consistant , inexpensive, and rediely available.

Reviving an old thread to provide some additional information.

I found a source that actually reported on pressure testing of cut shells. In the NRA Illustrated Reloading Handbook (circa 1960), here is a link:
    http://www.castpics.net/subsite2/ClassicWorks/NRA_IRH.pdf

See page 81 for the report.

    Cliff notes version:
It does not cause a pressure spike when shot but is a bad idea for other reasons including possibly leaving an obstruction in the barrel for subsequent shots.
