Well with ammo being what it is, I picked up a little Crossman Shockwave in .22. An advertised 950fps with alloy and 850 with lead? Well heck that’s not too far off a “real” .22. I have some pellets coming today and am looking forward to sighting it in.

I mainly got it for pest control. My rear neighbor has had raccoons, cottonmouths, timber rattlers, water moccasins, and now my dogs have gotten locked onto a opossum on his side of the fence. The wilds of Charleston abound with things my pups shouldn’t get into!

Looking forward to some backyard fun and ground control.

Congrats on the new air rifle. If you aren't too familiar with them, they are pretty picky about pellets. One pellet you should always try is the Crosman Premier hollow point. These are available and most places that sell air rifles and are cheapest at Wally World. You will only get about 17 or so foot pounds of energy with that type of rifle. Brain shots are mandatory for a humane kill and large raccoons would be marginal unless very close.

Here is a link to give you some ideas about hunting coons.

Thank you so much! I’m not super interested in ripping a raccoon up unless it’s in the day time...never good to see a coon in the sunlight that doesn’t want to look away.

My main focus is the opossums and the snakes. Let alone some fun target plinking!!

Leave the possums alone! WTF do people think they need to kill possum? They are only tasty when they are young and they eat a metric shit ton of ticks.

    Snakes are protected.

That’s all fine and dandy, I’d rather my dogs (German short hair pointer, insane prey drive, and a 105# Cane Corso) not get the possum. They literally kill everything that comes in the yard in a very unpleasant death. Animal control doesn’t do wildlife, wildlife doesn’t do traps. I have a pellet gun. A quick humane death IF I see it again is more desirable than disembowelment.

Y’all guilted me into feeling like I need to justify myself. Don’t we hate that?

Please don't say Y'all as that is painting us with the same brush. The left does this all the time and we don't like it.

Kill what you want, IF it needs killing. If I saw a 'coon acting abnormally in daylight and was hanging out in my immediate vicinity, I would probably dispatch it too.

I used to abhor possums though, until my wife educated me about them. Now I think they're pretty cool.

I shoot coons (eat them, too). Same with groundhogs. I don’t kill things that don’t need killing. Possums are in the category with bats and buzzards. They don’t harm anything. They do benefit you in the long run.

Trust me. I’m a humane hunter and actually an animal lover. Animals typically fall into a category above humans for me. I don’t WANT to kill any critter in my yard. However, I don’t like when my dogs rip a squirrel in half, tear legs from rabbits, etc. When they DO do that I rush out for a speedy neck snap as a blessing.

I’m not one for killing what I don’t eat either. I WOULD skin the opossum (if dispatching is required) to at least utilize some part of its passing.

In regards to y’all. I do not even in one ounce of my being intend to paint with a broad brush. And if someone felt lumped in, then I do apologize.

Young possums are tasty, as are young ground hogs and any sized coon, IMO.

Heck yeah brother!! Like I said, I’m not in a blood lust here. Ultimately I want them to move on down the road. Go live happily and proposer elsewhere. This yard isn’t safe!!

On the flip side, I am thoroughly enjoying pulling a trigger without worry again. I made a really sturdy target / bullet trap. (2) 2x10”’s held together by (3) 2x6”’s screwed perpendicular across the back. 1x4” frame to hang targets, small shelf for reactives. And leaned against an 8’ diameter oak that has grown two main trunks.

No ammo worry, no lead shot, let’s go!!

I was stunned to learn oppossums rarely live more than 3 or 4 years. I'm guessing the tastey ones are yearlings.

    Yes.
Dogs are tasty also to many people..
I am not against it. If you spend any time around pigs, you know they are very smart. Why do people have no problem eating pork, but get uptight over dog? As long as food animals are treated/dispatched humanely I have no problem with it.

I was spraying some rem oil down the barrel in between shots yesterday...the third or fourth go of that resulted in supersonic crack. Sounded exactly like a .22 rifle lol....ehhhh maybe I’ll oil after shots not between. Ammo was H&N Field Target Trophy Green. 9.57 gr. They don’t shoot the greatest and I have some heavier stuff coming today.

You shouldn't put any petroleum based oil in an air rifle. Doing so will result in dieseling which will damage the rifle. That's why you heard the supersonic crack. It was the oil lighting off and being fanned by the pressurized air charge. If you must lube your barrel, swab it out well before using it again.
