My apologies if this is already posted, I promise I searched the site...and I don't have access to the Water Cooler yet.

Just finished watching this video for my daily dose of hate porn and had a fun thought. We can use the system built and paid for by Everytown for Gun Safety against them.

Their text based system will apparently connect you directly to your representative where you are encouraged to leave them a message voicing your opposition to the SHARE Act. However, they are relying on you the caller to leave the message proscribed in the video...but you don't have to. I will be going through this process when I get home this evening and will leave feedback asking my representative to support the SHARE Act.

I'll provide an update if there is anything interesting to report on the process.

Edit: I can't spell "Opposition's" without auto correct. Yes, it's a disability that I live with everyday.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here -- How do you know that anyone is actually reading the content of the message, and not just counting every message received through the Everytown system as an anti-gun vote? I see no way of editing the subject of the message (which is assume is an email.) I imagine that your logical, fact filled email in support of the SHARE Act will arrive in your representatives inbox with the subject line strongly opposing the bill.

So I went through the process yesterday evening and will add some clarity that is not completely obvious when watching the video. No email is ever sent, the whole thing is SMS & voice based. I like bullet format, so that's what y'all are getting.

    • Sent REJECT to 644-33
    • Received the following SMS message: "Everytown: NRA has Trump & millions of dollars. We have you. Call your Rep now to REJECT NRA's radical agenda. Reply CALL. Text STOP to quit/Msg&DataRatesApply"
    • I replied CALL
    • Received the following SMS message: "Thanks for calling! We need your help to keep fighting these dangerous NRA-backed bills in Congress. Can you chip in $15 or more now here: (removed gibberish URL)"
    • Also upon replying CALL my phone immediately called (202) 335-9009
    • I was greeted by a short recorded narrative telling me which bills I needed to tell my representative to oppose, essentially script coaching.
    • I was then prompted to enter my ZIP code, which I did.
    • I was asked if my representative was Elijah Cummings, John Peter Spyros Sarbanes, or if I was totally clueless and needed further assistance.
    • I keyed-up JPSS, as he is my representative :sad20:, and was immediately patched through to his local (I think) office, where a real human answered the phone!
    • I politely told the lackey my name and explained that I am one of Mr. Sarbanes's constituents, and I wished to voice my opinion on a couple of bills.
    • I asked for the congressman to support H.R.38 (the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017), and the SHARE Act.
    • I said thank you and good-bye, then hung-up.

It was a fun exercise but (insert sound of other shoe dropping)...you can just call (202) 224-3121 and get the same hand-holding ZIP code search-for-my-congressmen treatment without the whole "we're all gonna die" anti-2A propaganda auto-receptionist. One thing I will be interested to find out is if the Everytown organization ever reaches back out to me for support through their clever SMS system.

Good intent, however, its much easier to just call your representatives directly.

I watched the video posted, its sickening to watch all these celebrities repeating the same anti-self defense message over and over, presumably the most ignorant people in the world fall for this type of advertising. I wouldn't want to use their SMS system, might subject you to privacy concerns and future solicitations.

Suppressors and concealed carry permits, especially national reciprocity had nothing to do with the Mandalay shooting. All of these celebrities have armed security when they are filming movies, many of them have private armed security or own guns themselves. The hypocrisy is stunning.

Here's an entertaining and informative discussion about this latest campaign:

and you are paying for them to do so. they are without a doubt getting huge tax deductions for donating their time to a public service announcement

How does that work? oh, it doesn't.. Gift of services (or time as mentioned) is not deductible.
