I'm running an 18" barrel with a rifle length gas tube and a carbine stock. What is the preferred buffer for this setup? I currently have a standard carbine buffer in it. I used to have an H2 buffer, but that's currently AWOL. Right now, recoil is like shooting .22 LR with 5.56 ammunition. Thanks.

Preferred setup is whatever reliably works. It it works for you as is, leave it be. It's worth trying a variety of loads to make sure the rifle performs to your satisfaction. Probably not worth the bother to test .223 varmint loads unless you normally shoot them.

Too many variables to say what buffer to use.

All of these things dictate Buffer Weight:

Type and Strength of Action Spring
    Gas Port Size
    Dwell Time
    Gas System Length
    Ammo (Gas Port Pressure)
    Suppressors
    B.C.G. Efficiency
    Hammer & Hammer Spring Type

I suggest click adjustable gas and a suitable gas port size to run all brands of ammo.

The most versatile carbine buffer is this kit:

Thanks, Clandestine. I will see about ordering one when I'm working again.

Since I was pretty sparse with the description, here's more info.

18" SPR profile barrel with the stock gas port
    Rifle length gas tube
    M-16 BCG
    Carbine spring and buffer
    POF 4 pound trigger pack

I'm running 55-77gr ammunition. With the 55gr ammunition, I'll run either the Federal XM193 ammunition or my own reloads, which match the speed of the Federals. With the 77gr, I'm matching Black Hills factory ammunition. I have not run into any issues cycling these or any other ammunition since I got the gas key fixed. I just want to make sure I'm not battering parts with the current setup.
