Old school sometimes is best not all the time...but most
acquire quickly main goal, wide field of view as you said
slap a high power scope on there and see want happens
spend to much time "trying" to find /see the target, then
    it's too late...
variable 1-6 or fixed say 2.5 or 4x. just a thought

and ole school here... the least amount of "crap" hanging
on it, that's one less thing to worry about, JMO

That problem can be 'learned' away.

Anyone having problems getting the scope on target needs to practice two things. Pointing their rifle AT the target as they bring it up to their cheek and keeping both eyes on the target while doing so. You have to keep your eyes fixed on the target. Bring the scope to your eye, not your eye to the scope.

I think FFP 1-8x LPVOs are currently where it's at, and you can get some pretty respectable ones at the $600 mark if you keep your eyes open. I will continue to profess my love for the XTR II 1.5-8x DFP due to the truly daylight bright reticle, but I know some people love the Vortex ones. IMHO, there is no point to buying 1-4x scopes anymore; the capability bump you get from going to 8x is just huge.

I will admit that there is a soft spot in my heart for reflex plus magnifier setups, simply because I like the flexibility of running with a true reflex sight when I can't easily get a good cheek weld, but on the whole, they're not as good as LPVOs for the money you pay (good reflex sight plus good magnifier >= money you'd pay for a good 1-8x LPVO and mount). I would not bother buying ACOGs or other prism optics at this stage of the game, unless I got some sort of astoundingly good deal on one (and, to be fair, the Steiners often qualify).
