Old ordnance is so prevalent on the north tract of the Patuxent Preserve that EOD now has a work area on the north tract.

That wouldn't surprise me. Imagine what they'd find if they starting digging up Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

IIRC, there's a place in Beltsville that used to be a WWI ammo dump. When the owner digs around, he occasionally still finds ordnance that the Army has to come get.
The really scary bit is this place is some sort of kid's castle/playground. Sellman/Rhode Island/Kent Ave in Beltsville.

How many of these places have been forgotten about?

Fort Meade was home to an Armored Division prior to WWII. The area that is now the North Tract of Patuxant Wildlife was the Tank Ranges. Unexploded Ordinance (UXO) is the main reason this are was not sold for development during the first BRAC. The survey costs were astronomical and that didn't even touch cleanup. Turning it into a Wildlife Refuge avoided those costs.

UXO surveys are a very important part of any construction project on Fort Meade, yes it's that prevalent. The ball fields at the entrance to the North Tract took forever to build. Every time they turned the ground, something went clunk!!!!

Spent most of my 33 year fed career in Facilities at Fort Meade.........;-)

Hey Mack - When I flew out of Tipton AAF in early 90s, some of the guys told me about EOD coming out and blowing holes in the runway or taxiway when they found UXO. True?

A few years ago the Polish government accidentally sent a live canister of Zyklon B over here. IIRC it was for the Holocaust museum. They thought it was an empty relic and it came in by diplomatic courier so no customs check. Can't remember where exactly it ended up when finally discovered but I do recall it needing Hazmat response.

Very true story. I cannot find the photo but the airport is covered with little flags marking UXO.

Here is the clean up to confirm, via EPA:

Don't have direct experience with the airport, but the ballfields were a sea of little white flags and once they were cleared things were still going clunk almost everyday.

I was flying a LOT out of Tipton in the mid-late 1990s until BRAC and the turnover of the airport sent operations out to Lee in Annapolis.

I can recall flying over Tipton several times seeing little flags popping up like dandelions and reading reports of the TONNAGE of EOD/FOD that was being pulled out of the ground as they extended the runway. I used to hunt whitetail in the north tract and had no idea what those little flags were all over the place.

One of the facilities engineers told me there was a lot more but since they were only working the one section, the rest of the airfield wasn't cleared. That was around '99-2000.

I lived in San Diego in the early '80s when some kids got blown up in Tierra Santa, a former Marine corps/Navy gunnery range that wasn't quite cleared of all UEO when the developers paid off the right politicians and started putting up condos, apartments, golf courses and all that... that was a mess. Had teams of EOD guys scouring the playgrounds and fields for months (years?).
