Alright guys, I have other goodies for anyone who would want to break into my house. I am aware that the 9x18 round is not the best for bad situations. But, say the placement was in good places would 6 rounds take care of a bad situation or would you need 8. I am considering between a P64 and a regular Makarov. What do ya think. Bud

For home defense get a AR!!! I have a p64 and would be one of the last guns I would use for home defense. If you need more than 6 rounds the mag release in a stressful situation could be problematic .

I would never trust a surplus handgun in any emergency situation.

Haven't had a surplus semi-auto yet that fed and ejected properly 100% of the time.

    Including my Browning Hi-Power.

    Yeah but....
Most of us have different defensive considerations than an Osama Bin Ladin and our potential bad guys are less dedicated to the cause and less prepared for a protracted firefight.

For some reason, I read alot about the P64 being snappy. Both are proven military firearms. Never shot the P64; I have a Mak and love it. The bedside firearm is a CZ-75 though. If I wanted a long gun, it would be my CZ Scorpion or my Rem 870

Thanks Three band. Just a personal thing I would never have a round in the chamber of any gun

I won't touch the " all you would need " statement . But 9x18 is certianly " almost reasonably adaquate " , and plenty of people rely on less .

So if you shoot your Mak reasonably well, and you feel sufficient confidence in it , it isn't a glaringly bad choice for you .

Try out a P64 if you wish. By reputation the DA trigger isn't as good, and it's snappier . Not with standing the issued roles by Commie forces, by our context , a P64 is a pocket pistol, and a Mak is an oversized pocket pistol with service pistol pretensions.

Added - I used to use a S&W Victory Mdl as a duty gun, and would have no issues with S&W M1937 filling in for potential social purposes.

If definition of "surplus" extends to former LE and quasi-LE the list gets really long, and not just revolvers . I used to have a former (iirc) Venizualian Secret Police S&W M469 , and it ran 100% for me .

If you go Makarov, consider cz82 - 12rd mags can be had at Chantilly gun show or at DK Firearms (ip here).

Classic has the cz82 in stock which you'll need to phone order to have them ship without mags on your c&r. By the time you add in rebuying mags out of state, you're into glock price range.

I would consider the round as secondary defense after the 51 rds of 9mm luger have been expended.

I carry a CZ82 around the house and woods. It is loaded with Buffalo Bore Hard Cast lead mixed with Hornady Critical Defense loads. I feel that it has enough firepower for self defense.

However, the Ops to choices, a Makarov and a P64, are not in the same class. The grips, trigger pulls and sights on both of those (without being worked) do not lend themselves to great accuracy. Additionally, the mag capacity is less than the CZ.

Maybe I assumed too much, I was thinking the OP already had a Mak .

If OP dosen't , and his criteria somehow is chambered for 9x18 , the CZ-82 is by far the better choice.

But unless the OP is married to the 9x18 round on purpose, there are too many bargin priced 9x19 pistols to have objective reason to go commie for Home Defense .

    YUP!

Plenty of new and reliable and reasonably priced pistols out there to bet your bacon on.

Maybe get a Tok if you're dead set on a Comblock C&R for home defense.

Of course I'd buy a used 12ga for the same price but that's me.

If I was worried about Osama or his crew coming in I would use a real firearm , My AK :lol2:

Yes the P64 is snappy but it isnt why I wouldnt use it. I wouldnt use it as its old and things always seem to break when you need it.

I have no idea who is going to break into my house or try to kill me. I have no idea if they will have friends or be alone. I have no idea if I'll even have time to slip my glasses on.

Therefore I want and recommend a big gun with a bunch of bullets.

I agree about the Tokarev if you must go C&R. The 7.62x25 is a nasty round, especially in JHP.

I don't know about you, but I think the 7.62x25 is just too hot a round for home defense - plug the perp and the guy driving by behind him too. And put a few in the door and the wall for good measure. I don't routinely home carry mine for that reason; I stick with my P64 with Hornady Critical Defense loaded. It WILL kill someone dead enough for me.

Well heck , if the question is C&R home defense, the answer is S&W M10-4 .

I thought the OP was fixed upon a bottomfeeder.
