I will be going to Va. next weekend for an event occuring mainly on the campus of George mason Univ. I will be transporting expensive equipment and have a permit for both Maryland and Va. to carry. However the rules for George Mason Univ. are a bit confusing. Can I carry on campus since I am not a student? If not can I lock my pistol in my car safe when on campus?

    Mini Rant:
All these restrictions are silly, if you got a permit you should be able to carry....period.

    Sorry, done.

Im not sure of the rules but if you will be in the Manassas Va buildings and in the discovery building i can tell you that the chunky security guy there is a x cop. That may help or hurt depending on his knowledge. If the Statute says you can i would make sure to carry a copy with you.

The school statute posted above doesn't apply to GMU since its not a school as enumerated
There was however an AG decision recently regarding GMU that you should read.

As ProShooter pointed out that statute doesn't apply to GMU, but there are other rules that do.

George Mason University (8VAC35-60-20. Possession of weapons prohibited.)

"Possession or carrying of any weapon by any person, except a police officer, is prohibited on university property in academic buildings, administrative office buildings, student residence buildings, dining facilities, or while attending sporting, entertainment or educational events. Entry upon the aforementioned university property in violation of this prohibition is expressly forbidden.

    Statutory Authority
§23-91.29 of the Code of Virginia."

Interesting... I "visit" GMU on a regular basis to work events there. (Patriot Center) I am not attending, but getting paid by a third party.

Much like the wording at M&T Bank Stadium, they say "guests" are subject to search. Is a ticket buyer a guest or customer?

Ok, so since I am a guest of a third party (working for them) not a student, and visiting does that mean I still cant carry?

So vague, why cant law makers make things more clear in wording like "no guns on campus". It sometimes makes me wonder what the point of a permit is if you cant use it.

Well, I went and returned. All was fine, nothing bad. I really never expect anything bad but you never know. One of the guys helping out was a MD State Tropper, and he didnt even carry.

I dont have a CCW permit because I think the world is like the old west, I have one because I want to be prepare for the worst and be happy it never happens. I am still amazed how properties such as colleges and certain stores think think telling everyone "No Guns Allowed" will stop the bad people from doing bad things.

    VA SC ruling:
Virginia Supreme Court Rules Against Concealed Carry on Campus

News by Students For Concealed Carry on Campus
    (January 13, 2011) in Society / Guns
The Virginia Supreme Court has upheld a state administrative prohibition on firearms at George Mason University.
The ruling comes in response to an appeal after Fairfax Circuit Judge Michael McWeeny ruled the regulation does not infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.
George Mason University (GMU) has a policy which states:
Possession or carrying of any weapon by any person, except a police officer, is prohibited on university property in academic buildings, administrative office buildings, student residence buildings, dining facilities, or while attending sporting, entertainment or educational events. Entry upon the aforementioned university property in violation of this prohibition is expressly forbidden.
The court concentrated especially on the language of the previous Supreme Court Heller case regarding “sensitive” locations such as schools or government buildings. The court found that, schools being considered “sensitive,” the ban was constitutional and held that “GMU is a sensitive place and that 8 VAC § 35-60-20 is constitutional and does not violate Article I, § 13 of the Constitution of Virginia or the Second Amendment of the federal Constitution.”
However, the ruling is not an absolute ban on weapons. As stated in the ruling, “the regulation is tailored, restricting weapons only in those places where people congregate and are most vulnerable – inside campus buildings and at campus events. Individuals may still carry or possess weapons on the open grounds of GMU, and in other places on campus not enumerated in the regulation.”
“Students and faculty cannot carry inside academic buildings, or inside large gatherings like stadiums, but it doesn’t appear to impact general members of the public,” stated Kurt Mueller, an attorney with Students for Concealed Carry. “They can carry on campus grounds or, for example in their cars. The regulation isn’t part of the statute, so there’s no criminal penalties attached to carrying at all.”
Mueller also notes that an opinion issued from the Attorney-General in 2006 also deals with campus carry.

It is my opinion that the governing boards of Virginia’s public colleges and universities may not impose a general prohibition on the carrying of concealed weapons by permitted individuals,” the opinion states. “Pursuant to specific grants of statutory authority, however, it is my opinion that colleges and universities may regulate the conduct of students and employees to prohibit them from carrying concealed weapons on campus.”
Mueller said today’s ruling won’t be appealed to the Supreme Court because there’s no issue of national significance to be ruled on.
“The ruling is still an affront to student rights,” said David Burnett, president of Students for Concealed Carry. “The court specifically acknowledges that the rules center around people who are most vulnerable, and ignores the right of the people to protect and defend themselves in times of vulnerability!
“Virginia Tech officials blocked a concealed carry law shortly in 2006, saying it would help students feel safe. We know how that worked out for them. Feeling safe isn’t the same as being safe, and disarming professors, ex-military and other responsible citizens only emboldens criminals.”

New Release on GMU event from VCDL: (VA Citizens Defense League)

VA-ALERT: Gun Week at GMU -

April 4-8 is Gun Week at George Mason University (GMU)!

MONDAY - EMPTY HOLSTER PROTEST DAY

Karolyn Galarza, who is the GMU campus President of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus and who coordinating the events that week, provided the following details:

On Monday, April 4th, students will wear empty holsters on campus all day, every class, etc., as a form of a silent protest.

VCDL members are welcome to come and silently protest by wearing an empty holster. Possession or carry of firearms IN GMU buildings is prohibited by the Virginia Administrative Code - here is the regulation: http://tinyurl.com/4nrn4pz

    WEDNESDAY - VCDL PRESENTATION

I will be speaking at GMU on Wednesday, April 6th, from 5 PM to 7 PM on the past, present, and future of campus carry in Virginia. I'll talk about where efforts to end such bans are focusing and how students can help win the fight. I will also field general firearms-related questions at the end of the talk.

The location will be on the GMU Fairfax campus in the Lecture Hall/Lecture Center in Room 1.

The room will hold 320 people. Attendees can park in either the Rappahannock parking deck or the Mason Pond parking deck. Parking fees: 1 hour is $3, for 2 hours is $5, and 3 hours is $7. I believe they take credit cards, but you might bring cash just in case.

Here is a link to an interactive map for the campus: http://eagle.gmu.edu/map/fairfax.php

    RANGE DAY?

Karolyn was hoping to have a "range day" where there would be instructors to teach students how to shoot, but finding a suitable and accommodating range has been hard. If a range is found, I will put an alert out looking for firearms instructors and donations for ammunition.
