    Does anyone have experience with any good fishing rods suitable for backpacking/hiking? I always find myself by streams when I go hiking and would to be able to do some fishing while out in the woods. The only rods I can find are the Emmrod Pack rod and the Ugly Stick pack rod. Is there anything else out there that has good reviews? I tend to be rough on my gear so I would like something heavier duty than some of those light carbon rods.

    Also, ShaddyDan has my loaner Tenkara rod right now, but if you're interested, we could meet up and I could give you a demo sometime. I do most of my fishing in northern Baltimore Co.

    Ha, my dad got these for my sister and I back in the 70s. We caught fish with them too. :thumbsup: Knowing him, he's probably got them saved somewhere in the basement of their home.

    You can still buy them new. If nothing else, they work really well in tight places, especially small brooks/streams bordered by heavy foliage.

    I think that I got to get one then, if only to make my kids fish with it too. I recollect using the belt notch with mine. Complete 70s nerdy kid (and in Wisconsin - kind of like that TV show). :D

    Thanks for all the good suggestions guys. I'm going to swing by bass pro and check out that ugly stick.

    Tenkara looks very interesting! I've never done any sort of fly fishing before.

    Or I just might say screw it and get a pocket fisherman!

    I agree with the Ugly Stick choice. I am very rough on tackle, but like to use decent stuff. Ugly Stick all the way. In fact, they actually make a really nice Ugly Stick Custom pole that is as durable, but extremely sensitive and well made.

    :thumbsup::thumbsup:
    I have one that Ive been using for at least 7yrs and Ive caught lots of fish with it..it does split for smaller carrying. Ive only seen one broke which looked intentional and that was in a trash can. Im not saying you cant break them but they will hold up MUCH better than a shakespeare rod.
