So I went shooting today with a new Dan Wesson Specialist for the first time. The weapon shot accurate as hell and didn’t have any malfunctions. That said, here is what happened:

    1. I loaded a full magazine into a closed slide, then pulled back the slide, released, and it loaded fine.

    2. After firing the 8 shots, the slide locks open. All normal so far.

    3. I insert a full magazine and go to slingshot the slide, but the slide doesn’t budge at all.

    4. In order to get the gun into battery I hade to release the slide stop, which worked fine.

Is this normal? Is it a break-in item, or should I contact Dan Wesson?

I shot numerous other new 1911’s (including another Dan Wesson) and was able to slingshot off of an open slide.

How many mags did you try?

    I used 6 different magazines.

I just figured it out. I’m dain bramaged and put a Wilson Combat Shok-Buff in it. I have the Shok-Buffs in my Wilson’s, with no problems. My Colts no problems either.

For some reason, the Shok-Buff doesn’t work in the Specialist, but works in the Silverback.

Shock-buffs can be problematic in full-size 1911s and are a no-no in Commander sized pistols. Some pistols they work fine in and in others they cause problems...just an individual thing. Every pistol...regardless of maker...has plus and minus tolerances as minute as they are and that can be just enough to make the buffer problematic.
