If you're smart you've bought several of the 25 pound bags of table salt from Sam's club at $4 a bag and have them tucked away for just this purpose. :innocent0

Are you sure they are $4/25 pound bag at Costco because Amazon is showing them at $18 a bag. At $4 a bag, I'll buy a couple hundred pounds and take the truck to Sam's, Costco, or BJ's.

Just looked at Sam's. They have 4 pound boxes of Morton's iodized salt for $1.46, which is $9.125 per pound. I could stock up on that. BJ's has the same thing for $1.79.

You're not against stealing another man's property?
Why not buy them from him or ask him to breed them for you?

I knew somebody would get bent out of shape over that comment. Usually the virtuous that think they will NEVER be immoral, and just NEVER understand that NEVER is usually NEVER right.

Yeah, let's talk about reality now. You must not understand what a SHTF scenario is, or maybe our definition of it is quite different.

You think the rule of law is going to apply? You think you will not do immoral things in lieu of seeing your wife and/or kids starve to death? You think the 10 Commandments and the Bill or Rights will still be in play during a SHTF scenario? Just want to make sure we are on the same SHTF page before discussing this further.

Today, when money actually means something, of course I would buy the item from a neighbor. When money no longer means anything, I have nothing the neighbor wants to barter for, and my wife and/or kids are starving to death, the neighbor had better have a firearm AND be better with it than me. See, I understand why the poor/desperate act the way they do. Hunger and desperation can make a person do things he/she normally would not do. Kind of like when a situation is so desperate, whether it be slavery, starvation, dehydration, etc., that a person would be willing to risk his/her life for freedom, food, and/or water.

I believe the 10 commandments to be a timeless set of rules to live by although I routinely break the third one. You didn’t say you were stealing animals to feed your starving family you said you were stealing them to breed them meaning you planned on keeping them alive for a prolonged period of time. I’m not bent out of shape, but I’m surprised your plan involves stealing. You’re a resourceful and smart man, you can come up with something better than that.

Yep, we can all wax philosophical about it. People want to carry on here for self defense during a time or law, peace, and abundance. Imagine what it will be like when there is anarchy, no super market, no electricity, no easy source of water, etc.

Of course I would weigh the risks of stealing versus obtaining food some other way. Obviously, if food is available elsewhere, I would NOT put my life in danger by attempting to steal somebody else's livestock. I mean, there might be more than one person there, they might all have firearms, and they might all be proficient with a firearm. However, if there is no other source of food and/or the risk/reward validates the theft during hard times, I am a realist.

Easy to say that the 10 Commandments are a timeless set of rules to live by while one is rich, well fed, and living in a very nice house. Quite a different story when one is living in the woods, there is no government, and food and water is scarce. You ever stop to think about how many people the US kills each and every year to keep the raw materials, resources, and world stability in order?

When resources get scarce, nations go to war and the 10 commandments fall by the wayside.

Remind me what we did to the American Indians. How about the Mexicans?

We? My family killed and were killed by Indians. I don't know why. Maybe it was survival or maybe there was an argument at a casino.
Did the Italians kill Indians too?

I'm glad in a way you posted what you did. You've demonstrated that everyone is to be feared and not trusted in a time of crisis. The soccer coach/PTA leader/Attorney/CPA down the street will (or may) snipe you with his 6.5 if you stand between him and a breeding pair of domesticated farm animals.

Since I retired, we've made a point lately to check out every store we can, if only out of morbid curiosity ;)

Big Lots, Ollie's, Dollar General are the latest (though Ollie's can be surprising from time to time).

Some times, they will have something a main-line retailer might have been stripped of. But, mostly, I've become glad we can afford not to HAVE to shop there.

Earlier in the week, I saw 20 deer running across a cut cornfield at the beginning of my development. Happen to have a long range rifle or two. How many calories you think I can get from a couple deer?

This is when people in the country are way better off than people in the big city. Not that I am in the country or anything.

I agree with the others, wildlife wouldn’t last long in a total SHTF scenario. In short term it would, but it would be depleted quickly.
I’ve been trapping my entire life, people that TRAP have a HUGE advantage over those hunting for meat. You can only stay in a area to hunt for so long(daylight) many weather factors, wind, missed a shot, etc. my trap is ready 24/7, and since I’ve been doing this for so long, there is rarely a “miss”. I can go do something else productive and/or save my energy/conserve my calories.

Most people other than active hunters, don’t have a clue how to clean game properly either. And most, including hunters, don’t know to make use of animal hides, like trapper’s do.

In a total SHFT birds, would be the most reliable resource, for long term.
Fishing it probably the best option, for longer term.

And this is just a JOKE, people in town might not the wildlife, but there are plenty of pets.
