I've taken guns on AMTRAK before with no issues. It was ~8y ago, and I told them in advance, but they didn't make me check it. It was a rifle in a locked hard case...

About the only thing I agree w/ gov assistance is to get some High-Speed Rail lines in. This is really the only real option for less traffic anymore, both cars and Air.
Glad to see they have a firm policy now though.

Remember that they have to be in checked baggage, so the Northeast Regional, Acela, and Keystone trains (among others) don't have checked baggage, so you can't take one on them. If you are going longer distance, and not connecting via New York, you should be ok.

Anyone know what the rules are for the auto-train?

We're taking the train home from Florida this Winter and I plan to have a pistol or two packed in my suitcase, stowed in my car...

You should be ok. I believe that Amtrak tells you to use your car for baggage.

I believe that building entirely new right of ways would be a waste of money, but we need to upgrade our existing infrastructure.

Heres the debate on the other side.

Some of the comments are interesting. You can tell there are some rabid anti's there.

I say the only thing harder than being a pro-gun democrat, is being a pro-gun, pro-train democrat.
