By kit you mean the ammo pouches and cleaning kit?
If so, I’ve got ya covered. No charge.
PM me if you’re going to the meet up at welders. I’ll try and dig out one to bring.

Can anyone decipher this on the tang?

I can't make it out clear at all to the naked eye. I can see a 3 and maybe a factory mark. I have no clue what is in the 4 digit stamp. The camera picks up so much detail, but the surface of that area is smooth to the touch.

Looks like 43 stamped over an Izhevsk bow and arrow stamp. Not certain though.

No idea what that big gouge is about. Maybe a four digit number in there?

    Both above are speculation.

So it is originally an Izhevsk hex that was refurbed/used in Tula in 1943?

I think I see an 8 in the 4 digit stamp- I have taken pics at different angles and different lighting but can't make anything else out. The other thing I notice is that the rifle is a lot darker than other Mosins I have seen. Basically it is black compared to raw steel colored.

Of all the C&R rifles one could invest in, I think there are are better choices than a Mosin. There were cool when you could get an M44 for $250 or even $275 and surplus Mosin ammo was as cheap as 22LR; not so much now IMHO. To each his own.

Production at Tula was halted in the spring or summer of 1942 because the Germans had advanced to within a few kilometers of the plant and Izhevsk became the primary production facility. That receiver is an Izhevsk. Hex receiver production was halted in 1935-1936 at Tula and Izhevsk. Do you have a picture of the top of the Barrel where the date and factory marks are? One last thing to keep in mind is most of the Russian Mosin Nagants we have in the country, especially with in the last 10-20 years are rifles that went through the refurbishment program in the 60s and 70s and are not the same rifles they were when they were originally manufactured. They are rifles that were completely disassembled down to the smallest part. The parts were placed in bins and sent off to be inspected and repaired when possible along with scrubbing the serial numbers off of them in most cases. They separated the parts in bins once inspected/refurbed. The stripped barreled receiver was inspected and if either the barrel or receiver was defective it was replaced and made ready to reassemble. They took a barreled receiver and built a rifle from the refurbished parts. Once together the rifle's serialized parts were restamped to match the barrel's serial number. Most times you can't see that there was another number there but on some you can. One other giveaway was the font of the numbers/letters on some parts is slightly different then the numbers on the barrel. In other cases they left the old numbers, lined or X'd them out and electro penciled new numbers on the serialized parts to match the barrel. That's why it's parts match in most cases. This is another resource for Mosin Nagants and the members are fairly knowledgeable about them. https://russian-mosin-nagant-forum.com/app.php/page/97
