    So this may of been asked but I am wondering if you own a handgun in Maryland that was purchased legally through an FFL before Oct 1st, do you need to take the firearms safety classes? Or is the class work just for new purchases after Oct 1st?

    I have not heard that, but then I did hear people moving into the state have to declare handguns they have in their possession. Do they need to take the firearms safety course also?

    The training is for the HQL.

    The HQL is only for purchasing a NEW (to you) firearm after Oct 1.

    You do not need to get an HQL unless you plan to buy a new handgun after Oct 1.

    Since you already own a handgun, you are exempt from the HQL training requirement.

    People that move into the state after Oct have 90 days to register handguns and banned long guns. They are not required to take any training unless they are getting an HQL.
