Get rid of that law, encourage widespread concealed carry by all good people in/near/around the school, and you'll probably never see another mass school shooting. Most of the perps are cowards and would stay away. Any perps still undeterred could be quickly stopped with lethal force.

While this law should be removed, the individual states can basically override it with the only caveat being the individual is LEO or holds a CCW in that state.
One other wrinkle is teachers who aren't state residents are screwed whether there's reciprocity or not. Perhaps, at a bare minimum, amend the GFSZ act to allow for recognition of reciprocal permits.

Rep. Massie Re-Introduces Bill to Repeal the Gun-Free School Zones Act

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has re-introduced a bill to repeal the Gun-Free School Zones Act.

Massie's staff said in a press release:
Last night, Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) re-introduced the “Safe Students Act,” H.R. 3200. The Safe Students Act would repeal the Gun-Free School Zones Act, eliminating the one-size-fits-all federal ban on guns in school zones, making it easier for state and local governments and school boards to unambiguously set their own firearms policies.

“Gun-free zones are ineffective and make our schools less safe. 98 percent of mass public shootings since 1950 have occurred in places where citizens are banned from having guns,” Rep. Massie said. “Banks, churches, sports stadiums, and many of my colleagues in Congress are protected with firearms. Yet children inside the classroom are too frequently left vulnerable.”

“The only thing gun-free zones do is disarm law-abiding citizens and take away their ability to protect themselves and others. We shouldn’t leave our most vulnerable – our children – in an unsafe environment like gun-free zones where acts of violence cannot be stopped,” Representative Jeff Duncan (R-SC) said.

This bill, originally introduced by Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) in 2007, repeals the Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA) of 1990, which makes it “unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In 1995, the Supreme Court held the GFSZA unconstitutional, which prompted Congress to amend the bill in 1996. The Supreme Court has not ruled on the constitutionality of the amended Act.

H.R. 3200 cosponsors include Representatives Justin Amash (R-MI), Jody Hice (R-GA), Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), James Comer (R-KY), and Brian Babin (R-TX).

Some day this will pass and be signed into law... They also need to get rid of the drug-free school zones too. That's akin to saying, it's okay to use drugs, but we just don't want you to do it around the school.

Sure, her family could file a lawsuit and potentially win $, particularly cause it seemed like the shooter had a history and nothing was done. I think there’s about nil chance it would effect the city’s gun free zone policy.

What seems much more practical is that governor dipshit called a special sesh of the VA legislature starting July 9th to push gun control before the facts were know. The Republican legislature could now pass a law overturning VA Beach’s gun free zones and any similar ones in the commonwealth. It would be hysterical watching Guv Blackface try to justify a veto of that.
