A little orientation on the first picture if you've never been there before...
The river in the foreground (two railroad bridges) is the Potomac, it flows right to left.
The river coming in from the top/middle down the left side is the Shenandoah, it dumps into the Potomac at Harpers Ferry and the Potomac continues off the lower left of the photo.
It appears to just be a bend in the river......
