I am really hoping that this season I can finally have the time to get my butt out there and hunt some gobblers. I did a little 2 years ago and they either weren't were I'd seen them in the fall (in the winter) or they just wouldn't commit (spring). I only spent like 12hrs in the field though. This past year I never had time in the spring and in the winter they were were I keep seeing them, but I flushed them just out of range.

    Hey John,

Those are some fat boys I see there! I have been trailing birds on public land, since this will be my first hunting experience in general and first turkey hunt. I have seen signs out there, but going it solo has it's challenges. If you are gearing up for opening day tomorrow, I am as well! Any suggestion on which WMA to go to? I have been to Bill Meyer WMW, Belle Grove WMA, Sideling Hill WMA, Indian Springs WMA, Woodmont WMA. Belle Grove and Bill Meyer seem to be the most promising, with Indian Springs coming in third. Or if you need some help clearing a few of those big boys off your land, let me know! Send me a PM

    Grant,

I haven't hunted on public property in a long time so I can't give you any advice. Turkey hunting used to be about learning how to call them in and, when you got one, you really earned it. Now that they have fancy electronic calls, anyone can be a great turkey hunter.

    Good luck to you.

That is a hell of a lot of turkeys. I saw more in Patuxent during early ML than I’ve ever seen. I had 3 Toms and a Jake run across my back path. First one stopped 30yds away and stared at me for a few seconds before it took off (the rest ran across and kept going). Biggest damn Tom I’ve ever seen and I had the sucker dead to rights. Made me really sad I couldn’t take the guy. Oh well. Makes me hopeful for winter and spring seasons. I just have to figure out how to hunt them in the winter. I might try crossbow hunting them for winter. Let’s me have the option of deer or turkey. I’ve run across more herds of deer at close range at that point in january then I have turkey.

But from 8-10 and 1-6 I was hearing turkeys cutting ALL over the park. Plus saw that one group up close and probably 5-6 singletons on the ground or taking off from a roost. I guess maybe a really mild winter helped flock recruitment?

That is nuts, I just went out today for opening day for Fall season, hunting public land, didn't see a single bird or any signs of them either. Was at Belle Grove WMA, Woodmont NRMA and Indian Springs WMA. They must move farther south into Green Ridge State Forest during the fall. Any tips on locating a public land bird?

I mostly hit areas I’ve seen them before. So far I am 1 for 2 in the winter in an area of Patuxent I’ve seen them before in the fall deer season. Didn’t connect, but I did knock them out of their roost around maybe 8am. They must come down from their roost much later in the day during the winter.

Patuxent seems to have a fair number. I didn’t manage to call one in in the spring 2 years ago, but one of the guys out hunting did and I had birds responding to me. They just wouldn’t commit.

I have my fingers crossed for this winter/spring. That said, I know it is a stretch, but still hoping for someone to give me pointers during this spring season. Mostly needing pointers on calling (improving, when, what, etc.)

    Lazarus,

What part of MD are in you? I would be willing to team up in the spring if you are interested and close to the Frederick area. I am still learning myself, but i have done a ton of research of spring Gobbler hunting.

Much easier to kill them in the spring. Hunting them in the fall takes a lot of luck. Ironically, I was close enough to them a couple times in Washington County while duck hunting, but since I had #2 steel in the gun I did not take the shot. After I switched to #4 Hevi for ducks, never seen a turkey in range while duck hunting. SOB

Lazarus, you are the luckiest man I know to go 1 for 2 on fall turkey hunting and to have killed that monster buck as your first ever deer kill. You are spoiled for life. lol FYI - there are a lot of turkey around us, but do not tell anybody about it. Wink, wink.
