Fried eel is pretty damned tasty, but they are a bit of a bugger to skin. They also make great crab bait and we live line them for stripers (the little sand eels) later in the summer. Stick em in a bucket of ice, it makes em less fussy and easier to hook up. ;)

The blood of most eels is, in fact, toxic, but... cooking and digesting them kills any toxins, so as long as they are cooked, you can safely eat em.

Awesome! I eat the eel served in sushi rolls or over rice, but didn't know if the ones caught around here were the same edible ones...they are very tasty

Up north in yankee land, they grab them with a towel and smack their heads against the gunwale a couple times before hooking them up for bait. It loosens them up a bit.

I've eaten them before, but it was long ago. I think we skun them like cat fish.

Yes, you basically do it like skinnin and cleaning a cat. A good rinse, or soak in saltwater will remove any blood on the meat, so they are safe, and I'm sure sushi restaurants have well-prepared eel meat, so it's safe.

The bucket of ice works great... they are still slimy, so you need a wet towel or rag, but they don't squirm like the dickens when you try and hook em up and they are revived and lively as ever as soon as they hit the water... we will start fishing with them here shortly. Stripers love em!

    man you guys are whatever

I used to commercially trap eels - ate them - used them as crab bait and had them as cool critters in my aquarium

most ches bay eels get shipped to japan to get sold for $20+ per pound - remember all the buy boats at the ramp that take the eels to BWi and NYC to ship to japan

here's smoked eel for $100 per pound

BTW - great rockfish bait - is pencil eels still legal as bait - caught a shet load of rock on them

We went out to poole's island over the weekend. We were fishing on the bottom with cut bait. I was expecting to maybe get lucky with a 22' fish. Boy was I surprised when we were hooking up with 34' plus fish all day.

Damn, how big of a boat do you need to mess with "22' & 34' plus" fish?

Well, we struck out on our own this morning, a nice family fishing trip. I don't know how she does it, but my daughter always seems to haul in the big ones... :lol2: (could it be that she's fishing for two? (carrying a 7mo old baby boy around inside must be good luck!))

Got a limit in a few hours, none under 25", our best was a tad over 31". Headed over to Tolchester for lunch and some afternoon entertainment. A great day all around!

7/3 My neighbor and I went out. Neither of us had fished for stripers before. We figured out a few things on our own then picked up a few pointers from a charter boat that was anchored near us. We Threw a bunch back but a few were big enough for the cooler. I may be hooked now.

It's a woman thing... They learn early to give you that look.

Today I caught hands down my biggest fish, 160lbs or so worth.

Me debating on how to unhook the fish.

This is why I ALWAYS tell people to wear glasses, chit happens.
I also recommend bending back the barbs on your hooks, something I normally do, however this jerkbait was brand new and for whatever reason I didn't do it.
of course I caught 2-3 fish on it before hooking the big one so not new enough to be clean but new enough for me to not have bent the barbs down. SMH

I had a front treble hook on a jerkbait like that go through the back of my thumb a few years back....with a rather large creek chub attached to the back hook. It was quite the (painful) experience un hooking it and myself.

    That sucks!!!

I removed my bag/tackle box and as I went to put it down I caught it on the second set of hooks... I couldn't remove the hook one handed so I had to sit on the ground and try to support the bag with one hand and remove the hook from the bag with the other hand. I just couldn't get it all the way out so I had to unzip the top, unzip the inside pocket and grab the scissors and cut the hook free. After that point I was already in f it mind set so I grabbed my now easily accessed pliers, grabbed the hook, pulled down and rotated it, it took A LOT of force to get it out. Much more than I would have ever thought.

Oddly enough. It never hurt. It felt like I was pulling on my skin. The pulling part hurt in a pinch skinned feeling. But the hook itself never hurt. Once hook was finally out. It didn't even bleed.

I'm glad I didn't have a fish on the end of it before attaching it to myself. That would have sucked!

The wife and I were on Prettyboy today also. Did a little fishing and took a nice boat ride.
Saw a couple Bald Eagles fishing. They are impressive to see diving down from the sky to catch fish.

Did you see the small airplane doing flying stunts? Holy Chit that pilot is confident or crazy. Must be part Eagle!
