Is this basically a blued 686?
They are essentially the same gun with a couple minor differences. The 586 was a carbon steel frame finished in blue or nickel, the 686 is a stainless steel frame and finish. The other difference is that the 586 has been discontinued and the 686 is still in production, and there is also the 686+ that has 7 round as opposed to the standard 6.

586s more often have square butt handles too (relative to 686s), right? I personally prefer the 586 look in part because of this.

Ahh, I don't think so. The L frames didn't come out until the 1980's. In the late sixties, most police departments were still using .38 Special with 158 grain round nose bullets.
It's been awhile since I saw an Adam 12 flick but I would guess at at Model 14 Masterpiece or Model 15 Combat Masterpiece.
