Which Optic for 7.63X39 Bolt Gun, namely a Ruger Ranch with 16" barrel?

    Red dot
    Low power scope (2-7X)
    Medium Power (3-9X)
    High Power (4-16X)

    I am leaning towards 2-7X

Ive got a cheap bushnell 4x on my 799 and it works great. Took it off another rifle and needed something that would clear the mauser like action. The ranch should give you some options but its a close range caliber so low power and compact would be my preference.

    Scope recommendations

I have a CZ 527 in 7.62 X 39 and I shoot military ammo (Wolf). I mounted a Nikon 3 X 9-40 scope and put two shots through the same hole at 50 yards the first time I shot it with the scope. I don't need a better or more powerful scope than what I have.

I'd get either the 2-7, or a 1-6 or 1-8. The whole point of a ranch rifle is to be handy, right? Weight would matter then, no sense in putting the hubble space telescope on it... If the 2-7 is the cheapest option all other thing equal I'd get that, but some of the newer 1-8 scopes have some really awesome reticles that would be interesting to use on a bush gun too.

That said, my own 7.62x39 bolt has a vortex 4-12, but it's a fun benchrest rifle instead. I like the exposed turrets a lot, very fast to dial in drop and wind, lets the reticle be simple and uncluttered. Holds zero well, but at this price point glass is less than ideal, wouldn't use it for hunting at dusk or in low light. Very accurate though, even with cheap ammo, has beat out both AKs and a Sig Xi before.

So for a low power scope my weight limits would be 13 ounces or less. Looks like the smaller scopes are in the 11 - 14 ounce range. Nikon 2-7 Prostaff is about 13. Leupold VX-3 2.5-8X32 is about 11.

For a red dot, I have a Vortex Spitfire (older model with removable base) that is 11 ounces, and would be a good fit.

    [EDIT] Leupold VX-2 2-7x33mm is 10.5 ounces.

Honestly, I'd go on the lower end of the magnification myself.

16" barrel with x39 rounds, realistically your range is in an area where a 2x7 or thereabout, is going to be adequate for most uses. Assuming 2421fps from a 16.3" barrel, it'll be subsonic before 700 yards - carrying less than 360ft/lbs of energy. The drop is going to nearly double from 400 to 500 yards, so if you're keeping it under 400 yards, a 2x7 is more than enough IMO.

My vote is for the 2-7 in leupold's freedom line.
I picked up the 1.5-4 for my 300blk pistol and I'm pretty happy with it, especially for that price.

They can be had for just under $180 on most sites.

7.62x39 at 500 yards out of a bolt is hilarious... 10 ft of drop or so. Was at Delmarva once on a windless summer day, bugs nearly ate me alive, but was actually able to hit the target - scope was at the limit for holdover though. If there was wind I probably would never have hit paper. Dot of the 14x scope covers up the target at 500. I suppose people that shoot long range get all this, but it was interesting to learn all this for yourself.

A 300gr plated HP out of a 16.5" .50Beo was quite interesting past 200 yards, it became indirect fire past 200 - didn't even try to dial it in, knew there wasn't enough left in the optic. Managed to ring steel, but it made me work for it. Most frustrating, and enjoyable, day with that rifle I ever had.
