I see a lot starting to get into RMRs and the like for their pistols. I shot one for myself a few weeks ago (never have shot one before) and it was a different learning curve. I thought it was reminiscent of shooting with a laser. And the way I first used it, it was, and that was wrong. Trying to ignore the front sight was also a chore. I sort of gotten used to it, but still had a habit of "aiming it in".

I ran across these videos last night. The guy was very clear and concise explaining everything. He is probably a pretty good instructor.

Some probably know these techniques, but I have to think that most really don't know. I may get a sight one day, but who knows. Until then, I think this is very informing and well made videos.
    Enjoy!

    Thanks Blaster.

Whoever said you can't teach a bad dog new tricks is clearly wrong. (...or was that old dog??)

I like(d) the idea of a window. Then I was in some sloppy WX training with a couple of guys who had windows. They had rocked the course right up until then. In nice conditions, the window can be a game changer if you're proficient.

The way karma and me get along, I'll stick to my front sight. The old dependable metal one.

About a year ago, I had a RMR installed on a p226. Absolutely there's a learning curve (you're initially searching for the dot) however once you get familiar with it, it grows on you. After some practice, my follow up shots were tighter and accuracy across the board was improved. The largest advantage I've noticed is that you're less prone to close your non-dominant eye and your sight picture is on the target and not your sights..

Thanks for the video links. Sage Dynamics just picked up a subscriber. I need to go the red-dot route, getting older and trying to learn shotgunning which required target focus...

yep the hardest thing is picking up the dot, as it is generally a little higher than regular iron sights. i have two open division handguns where i turned the sights sideways to get the dot lower to the bore (by getting the sight body out of the way) and that helps, but still in awkward positions (weak hand, one hand, sideways around a corner, etc) it can take a while to find that dot.

At our club we have an action .22LR match and most use red dots where they can on both rifle and pistols. I remember in the beginning, chasing the dot on my 22/45 MkIII with a Burris Fast Fire III. After a while, it becomes natural.

Red Dot has no clothes .

Yeah , yeah , if you have a supresses pistol where the sights are obscured , it could be a crutch to work around it.

But the 'special red dot techniques ' can be directly substituted for ' point shooting techniques' . I suppose some people still buy into point shooting is better than aiming. But if you feel that way, you can do as well by just removing your sights, and using the top of the slide for reference .

And once again I feel obliged to point out , iron sights don't need a shim to maintain battery contact.

I had my rear iron sights fall off a gun during a class. I'm pretty sure the prior owner put the wrong meprolight sights on, but they weren't immune to Murphy and his law just because they were iron.

And I still can't get used to it, lol. If you want a good deal on a Q5 Match with Leupold Deltapoint, you know who to talk to.

I put a Vortex Venom on my Glock converted to .460 Rowland with XS night sights and haven't done anything more with it. Funny this popped up because I was wondering about getting it all sighted in very soon.

Arrived today. Got it mounted up. From 2 minutes of playing with it, I can see, per various videos I had watched, that presentation is key to whether the dot shows up in your field of view or not. I need a couple of hours to practice drawing and presenting and then to the range. No suppressor height sights yet.

Spent maybe an hour doing draw and present. I would say the dot is where I expect it to be 90% of the time. The other 10% - I had the lower the muzzle to pick up the dot. That should go away (i think) with practice.

I wish the window was bigger and the glass less tinted - I really do not like the blue hue to the glass.

So far, without having had the chance to put rounds down-range - those are my only criticisms.

I found this target online. Reminds of of the old Eotech zero targets. I will print a couple out to take with me when I get to the range.
