I'll preface this thread by blaming Milsurp Dan for luring me back into the Mauser world after decades of successfully avoiding the temptation. His late war Gustloff Werke K98k got me pumped and I found myself gazing at Mauser listings online.
-Ran across an auction lising for a K98k that I knew instinctively was special and different. Grabbed my old copy of Law's Backbone of the Wehrmacht and ID'd it. I was looking at a
"dual code" example marked bcd/ar 42. Built by Gustloff Werke and Mauser/Borsigwalde in '42. Original finish, no import marks, matching action and screws. Yes! Downside was non-matching stock and bands (bands matched each other). The upper band is for a later example and should be a "H" type. But condition is VG and I do have a thing for laminated stocks, damned attractive.
-I wasn't sure what value to assign and base a bid on. Searches for recent comps had high quality matching examples selling in the low to mid $3k range. Pre auction bidding had it at $700 less the vig. When the auction went live I was the first and only live bidder and the pre auction bidder was out at $700 so I got it for only $25 more. With the vig it was just under $850, something I thought reasonable.
-MauserBorsigwalde used sub-contracted receivers made by Astrawerke, marked "bcd", the code for Gustloff Werke. This example is from the "B" block. Majority of the production will be from '42 & '43. I'd call dual code examples uncommon. Even harder to find a non-import.
