Just got the renewal paperwork in the mail, now the question is to renew or not.

I haven't bought anything since I renewed last time. Anyone think of any must have pistols that will becoming eligible soon? Not much into collecting rifles.

IMO, there are more must-have pistols than I have the money for, right now. But I keep trying.

If you decide to let it lapse, you can shred your current bound book. Some people think that could be a good idea.

I let mine lapse years ago. Frankly the C&R market is not flush with good/plentiful firearms as I remember it in the early 2000's...

I was a very good customer of AimSurplus at that time ;)

I love the ability to have C&Rs shipped to me directly... still finding interesting things (this year will be my third renewal)... every year more guns become c&r... I would renew... it doesn't cost much and you never know when you are going to find a unicorn.

I had the same dilemma... I let mine expire, but keep meaning to renew it. Maybe this thread is reminder I needed.
I don't know if there will be anything I want available in quantity, but it's good to be prepared when something becomes available.

Buy stuff from Brownell’s or Wolff? Both offer discounts to FFLs, including C&R holders. I’ve made up my $30 in less than a year.

*waves hand a pile of C&R firearms also purchased*

$30 doesn’t seem like a lot for the possibility of needing it at some point. If you do see something you want, it saves money, time and hassle to just have it shipped right to you or buy it on the spot, versus it needing to go to an FFL, possible 7-day wait, transfer fee, etc.

Hell, even if you bought one every 6 years, IMHO that’s worth the $60 for a license and a renewal just to save one time you need to do the FFL-01 dance.

Mark my words, a month or so after it expires you will come across "The Deal"...

Yeah, I saved myself a couple grand that I couldn't spare anyway, between Feb 2019 and last week.

There is no penalty to letting it expire for a couple of months and then applying for a new one. One benefit is you have less paperwork as the old book can be destroyed since the law requiring you to have it does not apply after your 03 FFL expires.

I let mine expire in july and still haven't reapplied. Its saved me some money but ill be sending in my new form soon. I have noticed when dealing with ffls at gunshows, its easier to negotiate cheaper deals with a c&r because its any easy transaction.

I sent my renewal in by 2 day priority a couple weeks ago, as I was a little lazy getting around to it. It's only $30 and I have been thinking about a Walther PP or PPK, and then there is the whole Luger thing. I like getting old guns delivered by mail. Although I don't have many more things I have to have, another S&W revolver could make me very happy to have renewed the old C&R license.

I let mine expire last year. The days of C&R deals are over. There was a time that it was a very attractive way to buy but in today's world, those deals are long gone. Sure, it may help with a handgun purchase or 2 dozen, but I just felt it was time to move on. I know I've never heard of it happening, but I wasn't looking forward to the men in black coming to my house to review my bound book and inventory.

I don't fault anyone who has kept up with the license, but for me, I didn't see any positives and the list of negatives were growing yearly.

This brings up a question, if you let your license expire, you can destroy your bound book. If you get a new license at some point, do you have to enter the firearms you already had or just the ones you purchase after your second license comes in?

The laws relating to a person holding a C&R 03 FFL no longer apply once you are not a "Licensee." You can do what you want with your book and any other records you have. Laws for other FFLs are different and they must dispose of there records as required in the CFR.

IANAL but was a holder of several types of FFL's at one time.

I was told back when I first received my license that I would have to do exactly that. I don't know how the rules/laws are written now.
