    Alright,
So I posted this on a couple other forums, so if you read it there I apologize. Anyway, I've been looking at a short .223 bolt gun. I was looking at GB and found some NIB 700 actions for sub-$300. That got me to thinking about the possibility of building one up. Anyway, what are some of the more, how shall I say, "affordable" barrel makers? How does a Remage fitment work?

Remage uses the Savage barrel nut system, which has no shoulder on the barrel. You screw the barrel into the receiver until you get the correct headspace, then tighten the barrel nut down to 40-50 ft/lbs, and it's done.

In a Mauser (and Remington) you install a short-chambered barrel, tighten it down, then ream the chamber to correct headspace. The Savage system is simpler since you only need headspace gauges.

Any downsides to the Remage system? Seems like a great way to go.

Those 2 are the only ones that I’ve shot, and they are both good. Shilen is better between the two.

Just about every barrel maker will do a Remage barrel.

Heck, for less than $400, you can get Lilja barrel.

Nothing like a barrel from a benchrest guy for accuracy.

why not just buy a 223 bolt gun and chop and recrown the barrel?

pipe cutter works good for the chop, and the Brownells reamer does good for the crown job

If you want short, then it sounds like you are looking to build a scout rifle or brush gun. so while accuracy is important, it isn't as important as in a benchrest gun

I guess it depends on your context of inexpensive .

Moving down the price scale , E.R. Shaw. .

Because at the end of the day, I'll still have sunk a lot of money into a gun with a factory barrel. Granted Howa and Tikka have good factory barrels. I wanted something with a 1:7 or 1:8 twist though with a Wylde chamber to give me the versatility to shoot 5.56 "blaster" ammo should I want to do that. While just about any factory .223 bolt gun can shoot 5.56, some don't advise it. Also, I figure if I get a Howa or Tikka, by the time I do barrel shortening, changing of stocks etc it's not really saving any money

if you are worried about price dont try to build one.

    True.

Because if you are serious, you will also want to have the action trued. And maybe a custom bolt knob.

    Then a better stock............

    :D
